Why is everyone so mad about WCBS changing??

After all, they have an Online stream now, and will soon be available on HD radio. They are even going to be adding shows, from the former Wcbs DJs. As you probably know, Im not a huge oldies fan, but I dont totally hate the format. It seems like WCBS is doing much more with their webstream, then what Star 93.7 in Boston did with their online streaming and website. And dont even get me started on Party 93.1, and their webstream. Not only that, but WCBS is going to be available on HD radio soon, So it isnt like they abandoned you completely. If you havent been there yet, its www.wcbsfm.com Now, less Oldies talk, lets use this board for what it is supposed to be used for, and get back to KTU and Z100 talk. lol...

Are you serious? Well... here goes.

CBS-FM had played oldies for over three decades. The personalities, jingles, music, all became a part of the NYC lifestyle. Now, it is all gone. The flip to JACK-FM wasn't announced. It just happened and left all the CBS-FM listeners in the cold. These listeners were LOYAL. Many never really listened to other stations, like myself. JACK could have gone on WNEW without a hitch. Some people would be angry, as with any flip. However, Infinity touched upon their number 1 FM radio station in NYC. It wasn't slipping---in fact, it was getting better and remaning consistent in the ratings.

A webstream??? C'mon. That's a slap in the face to all of the listeners. We want our oldies in stereo on the FM dial for free. Not on the Internet with some crappy audio and not on a special radio. WCBS-HD will not have the DJ's we want, I'm sure. CBS-FM listeners were abandoned, and unless another FM station in NYC picks up oldies, we won't be completely consoled.

Agreed. 101.1 FM in New York. That is where I want to hear oldies. Not online! I think they didn't flip Mix because they are in the middle of competition with KTU and K Rock has Stern. One question. Why is Infinity completely obsessed with Jack? And don't tell me because of target demos or add revenue. Was it nessecary for them to even bring Jack?<P ID="signature">______________

WMGCBS:

To add to your post, terresttrial radio is far more mobile than any other form of radio. At post time I'm listening to Richard Neer on my walkman to Sport Radio 66 WFAN New York.

Now you know how fans for both WNEW AM and FM felt when their stations were taken away and hardly a tear were shed especially by oldies fans.

***yeah, right- those HD radios will be available very quickly and everybody will immediately replace their analog receivers just to get digital radio.


Much of the anger you see is because WCBS-FM was a heritage, legendary radio station. Though their ratings and revenue shares aren't what they were, they were certainly very respectable and competitive.

If Infinity had the stones, they'd do a "bringing the Oldies back" campaign and slap it on the #23 ranked frequency in town, WNEW-FM. Even if they only came close to their #8 market ranking from 101.1 FM, it would be a whole lot better than the mutt format(s) on WNEW-FM.

I think because they wanted to beat PLJ to the punch. They thought PLJ was gonna switch to Jack. And they were also beaten out in 3 markets. San Fran, Boston, and Philly.

You gotta be kidding. The answer to your question has been hashed and rehashed and... ughh *SIGH*

(1) Oldies fans don't want to hear oldies on the radio, and not have to download it or listen to it on their computers or subscribe to satellite radio in order to hear it.

(2) Some of us think Jack is basically dreck! Imagine that!! (myself included)

Now, as you say, back to valuable topics like bashing KTU, pining for country in NYC, and railing against WNEW's programming... etc etc

I don't get it either. I was a very small part of CBS-FM at Black Rock early on. I was a fan later on. But c'mon. Nothing lasts forever, even legendary stations. I sat stunned in my office after noon on May 10, 1981 after "the music died." Well, the music did not die and neither did the jocks who played it. A lot of them came over to CBS-FM, thankfully. The music lives as long as people want to hear it but it may move. Now the music, and even some WABC and CBS-FM jocks move to satellite. Infinity has a right to run their business as they see fit and if they make a wrong move, it's money out of their pocket, not your's. You got CBS-FM free for over 35 years. I don't see where you have a complaint coming when the free lunch ends. You chose to listen. Infinity doesn't owe you anything (and you don't owe them).

I noticed the same kind of upset occured when Nostalgia stations flipped. Maybe the getting mad about stuff like this is something that happens to people when they reach a certain age. Stations targeting younger demos flip and their listeners may not like it but they find something else to listen to. There is not this sense of outrage and entitlement.

And had Infinity/CBS not been beaten-out (reportdely by only 24 hours in two of those markets) in those cities, oldies-formatted KFRC, WODS and WOGL respectively likely would have been flipped to "Jack".

Personally, "Jack"-type formats may have some merit (especially if live personalities were added), but Infinity/CBS should have flipped one of their other New York FM stations to it.

The controversy was not that "Jack" came to New York; it was because "Jack" replaced one of the nation's true "heritage" FM stations.

Had either WNEW-102.7 or WXRK-92.3 been "Jack"-ed (perhaps the latter running "Jack" outside of Howard Stern's hours until Stern leaves, then 24/7 as is the case in Buffalo), there would have been very little controversy.

Which is why WCBS-FM was jacked. This format change got more publicity than almost any other in history and probably the most since WABC dropped music.

Infinity wanted everyone to know that Jack was in town. I don't think they were anti-oldies. They wanted to come in with a bang and that is what they got.

You are absolutely correct. Agree or disagree with what they did, you have to respect the attention they've gotten.
