Why is FM News 101.9 in stereo?

It's a news station, so why not ditch the stereo and sound better? New York City is plagued by multipath, which is even more noticeable on a stereo signal that isn't playing loud, compressed music. It'll also add 5-10 miles of coverage at the fringes.

The multipath isn't noticeable on my portable HD radio in Manhattan because HD isn't affected by multipath. But on an analog radio, the multipath makes the signal sound staticy even though it's strong enough to overload.

You mean, they turned the stereo back on? When they originally flipped from music to talk, they kept it in stereo. When the news format was more fully underway, they turned it off.

Why not have it in stereo? Sports stations on FM most often keep the stereo on. Football play by play sounds great. With a news format, you can do wonders with the commercials.

Stereo actually adds more depth to the sound of a talk, news or sports station. The bumpers, commercials, the games and whatnot improves the overall sound in Stereo of an FM station. In mono, it sounds flat and lifeless. Leave it as is.

Does CBS run their FM sports stations (98.5 Boston, 93.7 Pittsburgh, etc.) with stereo? With sports, news or talk you'd really want to have the stereo off (in Albany, neither WTMM nor WGY-FM uses it) :)

Let's see.....

New news format on an FM in NYC. Let's make it sound good by putting reverb on it so it'll sound cheesy and old. HA. Great idea.

Perhaps since Merlin took over, they don't know HOW to turn it to mono. ::)

News In FM Stereo! GREAT IDEA! You can have news on the left channel, sports on the right. And on a mono radio, it will sound like....

Uh, nah. Forget about it......

Maybe they should have political talk on 101.9. Liberal talk on the left channel, conservative talk on the right channel.

101.9 is in mono, and has been for the past few months. Don't know what everyone is talking about here with it being in stereo.

What they DO need to fix is the audio processing. Everyone sounds nasal on the station.

I would be happy, for my usual hourly rate, to come and adjust the processing for them....

That would be the only way it works.
The right channel would win, since, as everybody knows, conservatism works every time it's tried. ;D
