Why is Geraldo yelling at me?

Has anyone else heard the spot for the painters he does? Sounds like he's yelling out a window the whole time, with bad edits thrown in for good measure.

The editing isn't his fault, but this is my whole point about someone who is thrown into the medium of radio without any experience. He has been a TV personality for ages, and that whole "Geraldo all hyped up and sort of yelling" schtick can work on camera. Without the visual, it's kind of harsh.

Compare that with a radio pro who knows how to deliver a read to be warm, conversational and comfortable.

As for the editing, there should be no bad edits in Market #1. Especially when a production person isn't cutting tape anymore.

I don't think it's about me, it's about effective communication on an endorsement style spot. Yelling for effect is expected in a car commercial with the MAJOR WORLD guy screaming about used cars. This is just Geraldo barking because nobody has taught him how to deliver copy on the radio. And because he's Geraldo, nobody will direct him otherwise. Listen to the radio pros read spots, and it doesn't sound like they're reading, and they certainly don't bark it at you. They "tell" you about something like they were with you in person.

And the sloppy edits are inexcusable anywhere, much less WABC.

I agree with you, TiRad. And whether he's Geraldo or not, he's accustomed to being directed. A good production director should be able to handle talent and get his guy to be excited about doing it right. And really, turdydance, your post makes no sense at all. What does "that 10% demographic" mean anyway.

Admittedly I haven't heard much of Geraldo's show, and I haven't heard the painters spot, but generally I think he sounds quite comfortable on radio. I've heard him do some good live spot reads.

The points WNTIRadio makes about the painters spot were my pet peeves with the spots Bill O'Reilly voiced on his radio show. Bill knows how to deliver a commercial but apparently he was given about 70-seconds of copy, which he read in about 70-seconds -- then some hack editor excised all the the breaths (badly) and time-compressed what was left. The result was something that should not have been heard on the Internet, much less nationally syndicated radio with some stations in major markets.

Give Geraldo the benefit of a doubt -- we don't know how he's being edited, processed or directed. Again, I haven't heard the spot in question -- maybe when I do I'll change my mind.

You are correct. TV is much more controlled than radio. What you hear on the radio is Geraldo. Radio is a great transition for him as he gets older he will probably want more free time and radio can be done from anywhere. Even from his yacht.
