Why is Hofstra Basketball on WNYG 1440 AM

I drove out to Hempstead today to try to get tickets to the Hofstra Basketball game. I noted from Newsday that the radio coverage was on WNYG instead of the school's radio station on WRHU. I could not get WNYG on my car radio in Hofstra's parking lot. Why does the university use such a weak station to carry their sports? I can pick up WRHU 20 miles away in Queens. Go figure.

I remember running the New York Rangers hockey games for a short while on WNYG back in 1990 I believe. To this day I still don't know why we picked them up. Honestly, who are you going to listen to the Rangers on, the 38 watt giant at night that's WNYG via a phone line, or the direct feed from a 50,000 watt clear channel (you know what I mean) station that is WFAN.

We've aired Hofstra games in the past. Couldn't really tell you why... I tend to stay away from those matters.

Well, Hello Joe... ;)

Anyways, my guesswould've been the timewas paid for on WNYG.

I don't know at all who does (calls) the games, but maybe it's an indopendent producer and he bought the time on 1440..??

It's possible. We air a lot of sports on weekends, depending on what's in season. Not being a sports fan -- couldn't tell you who won last Sunday's big sporting event -- I have no clue what's going on.

I'm not a big sports fan either.. I just know some people have gone out, independently "produced" the game, paid for the time.. and then sold time to advertisers. I know it used to happen ok WJIB 740 now and then....

I have an even smaller Night Authorization then WNYG and an even higher dial position, so sports at night here is nearly useless as my signal goes about 2 to 3 miles, tops (literally) and covers maybe 200 people, if that

'RHU has other programming that it is obligated to run and due to the size of their sports dpt (pretty large and well run for a college station) they often have to carry multiple games at once, especially during BB season. The decision was made years ago to outsource some of the games to commercial carriers so that it wouldn't violate station guidelines that prohibit too much preemptions of normal station programming. It is also a good way for the station to "syndicate" their programming to commercial carriers and keep local programming well.. local. 'GBB is not exactly a blowtorch but it does cover a large portion of nassau county and it is a beneficial relationship for the station, school and community.

Go RHU!
