Why is it, that there is never anything funny on?

This is my first post on any T.V Board, I thought this would be the best place for it. Out of all the channels we have on Digital T.V their is rarely anything funny on. Why is that? Does comedy not due well with advertisers, is it not as popular? Or, is it only popular at certain times of the day? Personally, I dont see any point in watching anything that isnt funny. The only reason I ever turn on the T.V is for one thing, and one thing only, and that is to laugh, and feel entertained. Why do people want to watch Dramas, there is no point to them, especially soaps, they dont even try to make the boring situations the slightest bit humurous. I dont see why people want to watch People being in Bad situations, I watch comedies to take my mind off of bad situations. At my job, we have a T.V upstairs,,, I work at a truckstop, and up stairs we have a drivers lounge, and I always put the T.V on either Comedy Central, or T.V land, for the classic comedys that Air Week day mornings from 8.oo A.m untill 11.00 a.m, or Sometimes mtv for shows like VIVA La Bam, Jackass, and Team Sanchez...Freaking Hilarious I dont understand why everyone changes my freaking channel, from funny shows, to something stupid. I feel no one ever wants to watch anything funny, they would rather watch people Fight and argue over some Serious situation, or watch some Cop Show. I think Crime Shows are Boring. Aside from Comedys, I also like Reality t.v shows, like Survivor, The Inferno on MTV. But I just hate T.V or movies that involve a gloomy situation, If I wanted to be Gloomy, I dont need T.V for that

Good observation. There's nothing "funny" on because the people who claim to be "funny" simply aren't. Neither do they have any inate talent. The only humor is watching these paople trying to deliver a line read off a cue card--and the net effect is zero. Today's so called talent in most cases couldn't even hold the door for Red, Milton, Lucille, Hope, Benny, and all the rest of the pioneering crowd in television.

Humour by committee is usually like most things done by committee - bad.
When you ingore research and focus groups you tend to get things of great humour - like Monty Python, but when you pay heed to them you get crap - like America's Funniest Home Videos.

I think TV has gotten to "Six Sigma." It doesn't matter WHAT is on, as long as that makes the MOST amount of money for the least amount of profit.

Networks used to find a certain dignity in putting on certain shows, because they knew it made them look classy. So it lost money, they'd make it up on a hit show.

Now EVERY show has to count.

Same thing in music. For instance Prince could make a "artistic" CD as long as every so often he came up with a commercial hit CD. Now they just want the $$$$$$<P ID="signature">______________

Watch South Park or The Daily Show. You should get at least one chuckle per episode.

Exactly. Because if a drama was humurous, it really wouldn't be a "drama" per-se. Personally I like drama shows, especially Law & Order. A good drama wraps you in, gets your mind off of life and makes your brain think about the show instead. What a nice break in the day! Sure humerous shows are good, and they have their place, but I have yet to see a TV show that can compare to the humor of a good movie.

As taken from the other side...

The Family Guy is amusing at times and Charlie Sheen can be funny on Two and a Half Men. But to answer your question of why there isn’t anything funny on TV anymore is because everything on television today is controlled by network executives and consultants. And they wouldn’t know humor if it bit them in the a$$. All they are interested in is profits.
Also note that a number of shows are only on the air for around for a few months before they either go into reruns or are pre-empted for other programs.

There are no Jackie Gleason’s or Lucy’s or Jack Benny’s around anymore. Those entertainers had complete control over their shows and brought to television unique talents. The closest we have today was Ray Romano, and now he’s off the air after 9 years to spend his money and, hopefully, not make anymore stupid movies like that Welcome to Mooseport .

What TV lacks today is originality. It’s easier to put on a Dick Wolf Law & Order clone, a reality program, or another CSI-type show, than it would be to come up with something new.

The latest trend appears to be female detectives trying to solve unsolved murders. Cold Case is an example. Kevin Bacon’s wife is on cable now with a similar program.

Notice there are no variety shows on TV anymore. Westerns are a thing of the past. If you want Science Fiction you have to subscribe to cable TV. The Shield only aired 13 episodes. And the Sopranos haven’t been on so long with new episodes I’ve forgot what the plot is anymore and now could care less.
