Why Is "Lite-FM" Doesn't Play 70's Music Anymore?

Thanks to Rick Alexander of the NYRMB for posting a thread to begin with on how WLTW's "Lite-FM" has stopped playing 70's music on any mainstream AC stations. The reason for "Lite-FM" is that they stopped playing 70's music for good. I wish they should give CBS-FM a shot, or other stations that you can get your 70's fix like WGNY's "Fox Oldies", the home of Van Ritshie, Bob O, Buffalo Bob Corsino and Joe Manglass. They all giving it a shot for some mix of 70's songs mixed with 50's music that CBS-FM doesn't play them anymore before "Jack" came in back in 2005.

I hope WLTW should take a different direction playing but music from the 80's through now, with no 70's music. Any thoughts on why "Lite-FM" doesn't play anymore 70's music? I've heard that WBEB in Philadelphia had stopped playing 70's music completely.

Aaand, why do they never ever ever mention that they can be heard here?

Remember, Lite will still be playing some 70's music - you'll just have to wait until November or so to hear it... ::)

I actually took a look at Lite FM's playlist...... if I had to describe it, it would be an 80s rhythmic-based slightly hot AC.

Now all they need to do is drop Delilah. WSB-FM Atlanta and WFLC-FM Miami did so.

So, it is not that Lite has changed, but rather that lite has changed.

Actually, KOST LA, a sister to WLTW, still plays two 70's songs per hour, with both mixing in 1 60's song (or rerelease of a 60's song) every few hours. Then again, KOST is a "sunbelt" AC, which means it can get away with softer DJ's and softer hits (most of it's air staff, while not vets of KOST, are vets of LA radio), and WLTW is in a more "upbeat" area then Los Angeles, which means that it can get away with playing hits that would appear on stations like KTU and Z100, yet would not be able to play softer and older tunes.

Also, Lite has Q104.3, one of the most popular classic rock stations in the nation, to protect, so it is probably not going to intrude on the 70's rock tunes.

But, I also think that Lite is making a mistake. Maybe it is just because of brand knowledge, but CBS FM plays all of the hits that were dumped by WLTW, and CBS FM is this close to beating WLTW in the primary PPM ratings.

Hard to fathom that "Drift Away" by Uncle Kracker is widely accepted on "Lite" stations these days, yet the original by the late Dobie Gray has no business on them.

But as Mr. "Leethal Weapon" reminds us in a previous post... the definition of "lite" (big or small "L") has changed over the years.

To show how hard Mainstream AC is getting, Tonight Tonight by Hot Chelle Rae is in regular rotation at B101 in Philadelphia!! Can you believe it!!! To me that is pretty hard rock. One good thing about no 70's on Lite. We don't have to hear Brown Eyed Girl or Margaritaville anyone!

We are not in the NY area and XM and the web might not be good indicators of this, but would someone please tell us if the less lite Lite comes along with less lite audio processing? Harder sound often acompanies harder music.

Nevermind, JUST heard "She's got a Way" by Billy Joel, from 1971. So, they are probably restricting the 70s to a few spins per day

Actually, the station looks a lot like a variety hits station, like the Bob FM Stations in Canada. And we all know how well THAT worked out at Jack..... now that I think about it, Jack would have worked if it was on 102.7 or 92.3.

She's Got A Way by Billy Joel is 1981 into early 1982 not 1971.

Hard Rock? Are you kidding me? Rhythmic yes. Pop along the lines of "Moves Like Jagger."

With all the research Jerry Lee does, you can bet there's validation to B playing that song.

I think the L. A. area has more retirement communities than the NYC area, where huge numbers of people retire to Florida - makes a huge difference

Well, there is that, and KOST has to protect KBIG 104.3, which plays hits from the 90s to Today: sort of like Fresh in NY. WLTW, however, has to protect Q104.3, which is at the other end of the spectrum and plays rock hits. So of course, KOST is going to lean older, with WLTW leaning more toward modern pop.

That's nothing. 100.7 WLEV in Allentown, PA is playing Gym Class Heroes (fearturing Adam Levine, that ultra-whiney and annoying sounding lead singer from Maroon 5) - "Stereo Hearts", with full-blown rap sections. NYC's "Fresh" 102.7 is also playing it, but I expect that, since they are really more of a Hot AC these days (for example, they played "Pumped Up Kicks", while no other AC station did). So is rap music now acceptable for AC??

CBS-FM just may see a slight boost from this. CBS-FM does play a moderate rotation of 70s music.

Thanks,
Kevin L. Sealy
