Why is Savannah Clear Channel GM-less?

Savannah was a money maker. They want to make sure the new person can keep the cash flowing...and flowing to the right place. That, and look at their competition. CC isn't scared of having an XO at the helm.

I understand that it was (and probably still is, a moneymaker). So why not keep the guy that you had?

And what does it say about the GM talent pool that it takes so long to find a competent replacement? And what about the internal applicants? Or is it that the best candidates don't want to run that cluster?

> and flowing to the right place.

Hmm.. was that a veiled suggestion that the previous GM had it flowing to the wrong place?

> CC isn't scared of having an XO at the helm.

Good for them! If so, that is certainly a departure from their past fears.

Savannah's isn't a major destination in the career track of most people. To be the GM of market 159, one should be a GM of a smaller or unrated market (like the last guy), or an OM, BM, or more likely, a GSM of a larger market looking to move up the corporate ladder. If you're a GSM, you're making a comfortable living whereever you're at and I'd be a little less than anxious to leave that environment for the wilds of the Coastal Empire.

I'm not saying it was, but putting someone in charge of several million dollars a year, you need to make sure they check out. Budget-wise or whatever.

A cluster can run on auto pilot for a while, esp Savannah. They're smart people. The OMs now-a-days handle most of the programming decisions, and the sales management can do what they do. Today's GM is more-or-less a "stick a poker under sales' arse to get more money" manager.

I'd rather them wait a few months and get the right person in over get a warm body in there now and have it blow up in a few months anyway.

Well, I assure you that they are getting lots of applications from GM's in smaller markets and GSMs in similar size markets. That's not to say that they are any good. I know a lot of good people who have decided to get off the radio merry-go-round in the last few years.

But Clear Channel also has a couple of highly regarded managers right there on Alfred Street. I wonder why one of them doesn't get the nod. After all, as you pointed out, they are money-making stations. Why not promote those who are contributing to their current success?

Oh, so you yourself are an insider. Well, good luck.

No...I used to work there...now I'm in Atlanta, but I still have alot of friends who work there. I don't want some pissy GM to blow the place up and boot people out the door. The people in house now aren't people I'd want to work for on a long term GM basis. The only person who I would want to work for there wisely isn't throwing his name into the ring.

Keep in mind there were some holidays in the middle of this search. For my sake, my co-workers, and CC in general. I would hope they wouldn't make a quick decision. Make sure it's the right one.

It might even be a situation of one person wrapping up their business elsewhere. Or maybe a person who got an offer backed out. Who knows.

Who knows indeed. Do you think we can rule out an internal candidate already working in Savannah? It seems like if that were going to happen, it already would have happened.

Was Tom Connally, former 96 Rock, Atlanta GM, the CC GM who left?

No, Tom never worked for Clear Channel Savannah. He ran the Cumulus cluster in Savannah. He then went to run the Brunswick stations for Qantum for a while. I don't know what, if anything, that he's doing now.

The last GM Clear Channel had in Savannah was Jeff Storey. He left last year under mysterious (to some of us) circumstances.

Not so mysterious. Karma is an incredible thing.

Oh, that explains everything! I rest my case.
