Why is The Tonight Show a repeat for the rest of this week?

Does anybody know why the Tonight show reverted to repeats almost mid-week? Somebody below mentioned it was a last minute thing. But why? Does anyone know? Is Jay sick? Did he have to travel somewhere? I know he never takes a day off, he's usually touring when he's not on TV. So, what's up with that?

In a slightly related topic......I caught a few minutes earlier tonite of "Loren and Wally in Primetime" on WROR (which is basically a 2 hour "best of" of that morning's show) and John Melendez, Jay's announcer, was a guest. John is appearing at a Boston comedy club this weekend.

This information doesn't answer your question and I dont have the answer to your question (and, quite honestly, I watch David Letterman anyway). I guess my point would be....well, I dont really have a point here. BUT....IF the Tonite Show was not in repeats this week, Melendez would be out on the left coast and not here in Boston.

John had recorded the voice overs for Thursday and Friday's shows before leaving. They were scheduled to be new both days, but were replaced with repeats. Affiliates were notified about the change about 9 ET on Thursday. The promos for the all new shows ran during the 8 pm hour, but were changed for the 9 pm hour.

But why?

Ok, all of that only confirms that he was supposed to be new, and wasn't.
So my question remains unanswered, why?
It's possible nobody knows. But one things for sure, something smells bad.
I hope something bad did not happen with Jay. The fact that there's been no press about this (and I did google it) indicates something is wrong. Let's hope not.

I'm sure there is an explanation. But if anyone knows, please do mention it. Maybe Conan will say something about it, since he's continued to do his show this wek (but I doubt it).

Actor Joaquin Phoenix is on tonite's repeat....and he was just in a rollover car accident yesterday.

Interesting...as David Letterman was also repeats Thursday and Friday, but had new shows Monday, Tuesday and Wed.

Re: But why?

For now, I'm going with the "Car accident" theroy that when an actor is injured or has passed away, it is good to air the repeat of their last appearance...why more than one night needs to be a rerun...good question.

It could be that with one day off, Jay chose to take a few more off to go with it...he is returning VERY soon...isn't he?

Chineese New year is Januaury 29th, so there is a holiday for the Chineese, but I doubt that's the reason...

Re: But why?

Jay Leno DOES NOT take days off. He is ALWAYS working. There are only 1 of 2 possibilities:
1. A scheduling conflict
2. He is ill in some way, either from illness, or from an injury of some kind, of which, it will probably be tomorrow or Monday before we hear an official press release.

Which one is it? Who knows...

That's what my friend at our local NBC station told me. The promos during "My Name is Earl" and "The Office" had been changed to reflect the change in schedule, as were the promos during "ER."

Still haven't heard an explination as to exactly why, but I'll pass it along if I do.

Re: But why?

Isn't Jay Leno going to be doing the "Tonight Show" from Turin/Torino during the upcoming Winter Olympics??

Maybe he'll be in reruns for a few more nights, then do his show from Italy for about three weeks, including the Olympics.

I think the reason for concern is the fact that new shows were scheduled for Thursday and Friday of last week. The guests were booked, John Melendez had done the announcements (he was at a comedy club this weekend and had pre-recorded them before his departure), and promos for Thursday nights new episode aired during the 8pm hour of NBC prime time programming.

Edit - The NBC website says a new episode will air Monday night.
Edited by BrettV on 01/29/06 03:16 PM.

Not sure about Jay, but a few times now Dave has run repeats Thursday & Friday Nights the week before sweeps begins -- and the Monday, Tuesday, & Wednesday of that next week. Then he returns with new shows on Thursday night (the first night of sweeps).

PEOPLE, PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE THREAD!

Once again, people are not reading the thread. David normaly repeats or tapes early in the week for Thursday and Friday. Nothing new.

What this is about is that Jay NEVER does that, and if you'll read the thread, a few posts down, Jay was supposed to be new Thursday and Friday. It was a last minute thing without any explanation. Guests were scheduled and everyting. That's what the thread was about.

Easy does it

>That's what the thread was about.

Now Now, calm down. Back to your corner.

So....how bout Conan?? Or Craig whatshisname on Late Late Show?? <snicker>

But SERIOUSLY....The Tonite Show starts in less than 3 hours. Just wait and see if Jay says anything on the show.

Poor guy...its been a rough few days for you, hasnt it? Repeats of Jay, no one properly reading your thread, everyone going off on a tangent. I just hate when that happens.

So...how's Nightline doing?? I understand Ted Koppel left the show. ;o)

Actually, I did read the entire thread. It sounds like the switch was made at the last minute. I don't have any answer for you, but it looked like no one else did either -- so I thought I'd throw out a possibilty to the first of SIX questions you asked in the original post: "Does anybody know why The Tonight Show reverted to repeats almost mid-week?"

Maybe he was doing something Dave has started doing -- and that's taking 5 days off over two weeks (Thursday-Wednesday). This schedule is something that IS new and has nothing to do with taping new shows early in the week for broadcast later that same week.
