Why is The Wizard of Oz...

...on Cartoon Network right now? I know Turner owns the rights and they usually play it on TBS or TNT but, why Cartoon Network? Can't they find another Scooby-Doo cartoon movie for my children to watch here? This is like the Weather Channel showing movies in primetime now also instead of having live weather forecasts.

I'm thinking TWoO may show on The Weather Channel, after all there is a tornado in the film. Also why not RFD TV as Dorothy lives on a farm. And LOGO for friends of Dorothy. And MTV because there is singing and music. And SyFy because there is some fantasy involved. etc etc :D ;)

Nice post.

I have given up trying to understand the mentality of cable networks. That being said, perhaps "Cartoon" is trying to keep OZ going by targeting kids. When you think about it, not a bad strategy.

Also, I've noticed non-cartoons on Nick toons. Drake & Josh are now on Nick Toons in the morning while Zoey 101 is on Teen Nick. (I have a 6 year old daughter that's why I know this.) Just as the name implies, shouldn't Nick Toons only show cartoons and live action shows be shown on one of Nick's other channels?

The springtime airing of Wizard of Oz on CBS was once an annual event

YES! That was actually something to look forward to every year as a kid. Sort of like waiting for "Rudolph" and "Grinch", etc. to air near Christmas.

"Didn't they make Wizard of Oz cartoons?"

Yeah, in the early 90s. But last I saw, THIS-TV has it. They air it in their "Cookie-Jar Cartoons" programming block.

If you were a young child in the 60's, you probably remember watching The Wizard of Oz on CBS once a year. I know it is ingrained in my memory...in fact so much so that I can picture the living room furniture when I think about it.

Wikipedia says it was originally shown in the early 60's between Thanksgiving and Christmas, but after '63, it was moved to earlier in the year. NBC took it in '68, but it came back to CBS in the 70's.

I was a young child in the 1970s and 1980s, and I recall CBS airing "The Wizard of Oz", complete with the rainbow commercial bumpers.

So...there's no cartoon version of Wizard of Oz to air? Or are they concluding that the characters are like modern day 3d cartoon characters...??

Oh and, about Weather network airing movies, I think they should stick to weather related movies if they must.

Or VHIC because Dorothy's pooch is named Toto. Or FMC because... well, never mind.
