Why is WORD 106.3 called "NewsRadio..."

...when it's news and talk? The way I understood it, "NewsRadio" generally referred to all-news, like WCBS-880 NYC, or WBBM-780 Chicago. "TalkRadio" referred to such luminaries as KABC-790 L.A., or WABC-770 NYC. "NewsTalk," to me, implies WSB-750 Atlanta.

What, then, I am saying, is that if WORD is news and opinionated talk, it should be called "NewsTalk 106.3 WORD" or a similar name. "NewsRadio WORD" is, IMHO, not the proper name for a station that also has talk.

I'm not familiar with the station, but radio stations can call themselves anything they choose. If a station with a talk format decides to call themselves "newsradio" it probably means they're trying to imply that they have a strong news department.

Good point! I never thought of it that way. Thanks!

There are countless other News/Talk stations across the nation that use the "NewsRadio" brand. 106.3 WORD isn't the only one. That is all.

This.

KMOX in St. Louis and WCCO in Minneapolis are more examples.

For a while in 2010, WGN in Chicago identified themselves as "News 720 WGN." After "Pig Virus" Kevin Metheny was fired, GM Tom Langmyer dropped "News" from the name the very next day.
