Why Isn't HLN Live On Weekends?

Given the serious events in Japan & on the west coast. HLN should be ashamed of themselves to run Natasha Curry & her smiling taped reports over & over again. At least MSNBC went live. Heck even TWC!

HLN is a waste of airspace, they might as well call it E 2, remember when HLN used to play real news and not what is happening to charlie sheen?

Exactly. But HLN has outlived its usefullness. I can dial up NHK through CNN live or TBS (Tokyo Broadcasting) and get direct from the scene info, without having to cut through the swath of wifty blonde "journalists" who now occupy HLN.

HLN needs IMHO to get back to their raison d'etre and that's news radio on TV. Give us 30 minutes and we'll give you the world with pictures. And they need to do it 24/7.

Leave the other stuff for CNN or a new channel called CNN Entertainment.

I used to flip HLN on several times a day just to get caught up and see if there was a story needing further review. HLN's decline and the addition of commercials to AMC are two of the biggest reasons I dumped cable.

That or go away. Right now, CNN is essentially competing with itself.

It's a crying shame when SEVEN local domestic news operations IN TWO OF THE SMALLEST PLACES OF AMERICA (Honolulu, HI & Portland, OR) as well as Japanese TV have put ALL of the cable nets (With the possible exception of CNN - And even that's not saying much since they keep drifting away to cover events in Libya, Wisconsin or Washington from time to time) to shame

The cable nets are being taken back to school with the emphasis being on HOW TO COVER A MAJOR NEWS EVENT

Sad to see indeed..... :(

Just my opinion.....

Cheers :D

You and I have VERY different ideas of what constitute "the smallest places in America." Seriously, Honolulu is in the top 75 markets, and Portland is in the top 25.

Also, I can RANDOMLY bold and CAPITALIZE words as well. :D

Never mind that the primetime shows actually are bringing in eyeballs, the entire point of the business. No, they should continue to model a format that itself is in decline.

Uh huh, that's smart business.

HLN has been irrelevant for atleast two years. I get the feeling that even if a meteor was headed to hit the planet, Nancy Grace spewing about some missing person would still air.

what do they think?that major news takes weekends off?

it does look bad if they ignore major weekend news stories.

Well.....While it's true that Honolulu isn't EXACTLY small (That dubious honor would fall to Glendive, MT), it isn't very big either compared to Portland, OR

That said though, I still think all the cable nets (Except for maybe CNN) should be ashamed of themselves for allowing the locals in these two cities beat the crap out of them!

Just my opinion.....

Cheers :D

Well they lost my eyeballs when they went tabloid. They've also lost some great journalists when they started dishing up the sleaze. If thats a good business model, I can afford to pass on that example.

I have said this before that CNN should take the best of both networks and place it all on the main network being CNN. I would just leave out the Showbiz Tonight junk.

Only problem I see is what would Turner do with that channel if CNN would to do what I said above. They already have TNT and TBS which show reruns of hit shows and movies and sports. They also own TCM and Cartoon Network and truTV. Wouldn't make any sense of it becoming a all sports network as thats already been tried and failed, remember CNNsi.

Anyone have any great ideas?

Big story for Sunday afternoon on HLN is Mel Gibson, getting no jail time for his domestic violence, HLN has been covering this for the last 2 hours and is still continuing, no news about Japan at all, what a waste, what are they now, another TMZ.

I also think they should go back to 30 minutes of news 24/7.

They lost yours, but they gained more. A win for them.

If you mean a win as in attracting the people that worship a coked out"celebrity" who says "Winning, DUH!", who have generally lower IQ's, believe that Nancy Grace is the be-all and end-all of journalism, and have less spending capital available for sponsors...well...if you consider that a win, I'll gladly put that one in my loss column.

I'm hardly a pious person, but I really need to wash up after this thread, lol. Good luck to you, and my regards to the lower echelon of society to whom you cater...and tell Nancy as long as white, blonde women go missing, she'll always have a job!

That was more of a sports-news network (i.e. what HLN was once known for, but all-sports), as opposed to a "worldwide leader contender" with sports programming.

Currently re-reading Reese Schoenfeld's "Me & Ted Against The World". The book is now 10 years old but echos many themes that have been posted here about what is wrong with CNN.
It seems HLN is just copying Entertainment Tonight and shows of that ilk. 5 minutes of promos for COMING UP NEXT and 2 minutes of actual programming. Earthquake in Japan, revolutions across the middle east.....Naw, Charlie Sheen posted something on Twitter......That is breaking news.
