I figured out why they call it the NEW 97.1 The River. Their playlist is now newer than Rock100.5, which has almost exclusively gone old classic rock.
Looking at yes.com for the last few hours, most of the songs on Rock100.5 are from 1980 or earlier, and of those that came after, most of those are from 1985 or earlier. The exceptions are by U2, Tom Petty, Great White, Traveling Wilburys, GNR, and the like--except for Great White and GNR, those would qualify as "classic" artists with significant pre-1985 catalog.
Top songs are similar, with the only post-1985 songs being by the aforementioned artists plus AC/DC, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Black Crowes, and Aerosmith.
It looks like the playlist is now about 90% "classic classic rock" with about 10% 80s hair (Def Lep, Bon Jovi, Great White, etc.). Absolutely NO 90s except by established classic artists. We'll see how they do in the next book.
