Why it's called the NEW 97.1 The River

I figured out why they call it the NEW 97.1 The River. Their playlist is now newer than Rock100.5, which has almost exclusively gone old classic rock.

Looking at yes.com for the last few hours, most of the songs on Rock100.5 are from 1980 or earlier, and of those that came after, most of those are from 1985 or earlier. The exceptions are by U2, Tom Petty, Great White, Traveling Wilburys, GNR, and the like--except for Great White and GNR, those would qualify as "classic" artists with significant pre-1985 catalog.

Top songs are similar, with the only post-1985 songs being by the aforementioned artists plus AC/DC, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Black Crowes, and Aerosmith.

It looks like the playlist is now about 90% "classic classic rock" with about 10% 80s hair (Def Lep, Bon Jovi, Great White, etc.). Absolutely NO 90s except by established classic artists. We'll see how they do in the next book.

It's interesting that the FTC regulates advertising for store-bought products. The "new" descriptor can be used only for a short time span (perhaps a year) provided the product is new or improved. No such regulation for radio stations!

they could allways try a soft ac format the new ez 97.1 atlantas choice for soft and relaxing favorites
That will never happen, unless Cox wants to flank B98.5 with a soft AC; B98.5 has gone on a strong 80s pop kick since putting the Christmas tunes away. I've said it before--B98.5 is Cox's attempt to sneak their "Point" 80s-and-more format into ATL while still ruling the AC roost.

I thought that Cox would move B98.5 forward in time to better compete with Star 94 and not so much with 106.7, but they seem to be doubling down on the 80s instead. Maybe Cox sees 106.7 as more vulnerable than Star 94.

If you like 80s pop and AOR hits, it's a great time in ATL radio.

You do have a point, though, in that there is now a lot of overlap between River and Rock100.5, and considering how poorly both stations have been trending (from what I can tell from the Cabbagehead "home game", and not the real numbers), something's gonna have to give.

Aren't they plugging "80s at 8" Maybe that is what you heard?

94.9 is still called "The NEW 94.9/The Bull". I guess it's the thing to do these days.

It's new to the Former Legends listeners. This is where they were directed too when it became the simulcast of the groove(now WiLD)

95.5 The Beat was still new when they went off the air...

LOL... Gotta love it... A Cox station until the very end!
