Why no Bruno on KNBR?

KNBR's ppm numbers are better than most had thought but how can they not take advantage of one of their best performers - especially when he's out of work.

Gary Radnich has aparrantly started his end of summer vacation break till after Labor Day and instead of taking advantage of it, they are using fill-ins as Tony Bruno remains unemployed in LA and phones in his half hour segment from 10 to 10:30am.

Wouldn't it be cool to hear Tony doing the 3 hour show from 9 to noon each day? Just a thought but I'm sure they don't want to pay the guy more than whatever they pay him to provide that very entertaining half hour. Didn't see the numbers, but I'm sure that's got to be one of the highest rated segments on the entire station. Does anyone know how that showed up on ppm?

I read where the ESPN suits in LA didn't offer him the pm drive gig after flirting with him for 2 months. Is this guy that much of a problem?

I've met Tony, spent a bit of time with him, and there is no more gracious or personable guy in the business. (Okay, except maybe Dave Sholin. And five or six others. But that's it.)

I think the biggest thing right now is $$$. Tony is a tremendous talent with network-level skills, a great sense of humor, a knack for pop culture, and isn't one of these dolts screaming at 6:15 in the morning about how Nebraska's backfield hasn't got the talent to keep up with ... zzzzzzzzzzz. Those guys are rare -- there are maybe four of them in the business right now, and he's one of them.

At the risk of being called an idiot blogger by Gary Rabbinovich (are we really sure he's on vacation?), KNBR and Cumulus need to figure out a way to afford Bruno and put him in charge of the morning show. Syndicate him from San Francisco and subsidize his paycheck by splitting the rights fees in an amicable way.

Tony Salvadore and Lee Hammer (says no) are smart guys. They've already had a lunch (or two) and several meetings about this, I'm sure. Adding Bruno to the line-up would be major...

...Unless they're grooming the great (truly great) Damon Bruce for the morning gig, or perhaps considering a simulcast of Lamont y Tonelli.

Whew. I made it all the way through this without saying one bad thing about the current KNBR morning show.

...Almost.

You mean the Lee Hammer who screwed up Dave Fleming's historic home run call?

Hammer is the ultimate yes man who has yet to actually make a decision/hire that actually positively impacts a radio station.

Bruno's the perfect hire, I agree. But, not holding my breath. Just my nose over the current KNBR Morning show.

radio hater,
You live in a world of fantasy scenarios. Ever heard of existing contracts. its neat to got to message boards and pretend your the G.M....but there are so many things you are overlooking. Or just clueless about.
You love Bruno, and he's got a nice following in S.F., but he's been around the block, everyone has heard him, he's burned a few bridges, can be moody and frankly, has a so-so work ethic. Rome puts in three hours or prep, bruno (from someone who would know) doesn't come close to that.
He'll eventually get work, just not at his price. But the radio world is not clamoring for him. You are.
The guy has gone from ESPN, to Fox, to Sporting News, to unemployment. Not exactly the direction you want to have your career headed at 55 years old.
I hope bruno finds work, he'll probably resurface on the ticket in S.F., he'll get syndicated by some guys I know in the bay area, get a decent check, built mostly around hope and stations, not base salary. He'll land on maybe 50-60 stations, but reality check kidees, when ESPN started caring about sportsradio, they took over. Like them or not. You drop the shows they promote, and they stick it to you. Money is No object.
Ask Dan Patrick. He's virtually disapeared. He's either on tiny stations in knowheresville, or tape delayed on good stations, sometimes up to eight hours. yuck.
The only top station he's live on is 570 in L.A., and he loses head to head with 710.
so Radiohater, keep dreaming, go to boards and scream as loudly as you can. Have unyielding, absolute opinions, but realize, you are so out of the loop, your almost back in it again.

you seem to live on here since joining Mr winer. I post occasionally and don't even know Bruno. What you YOU know about his work ethic? Rome has script writers and never goes to or watches games, so where does your brilliance come from in regards to Rome?

Get a clue before you come in here and play God.

Here's what I've gleaned...

Tony Bruno spent the past few days in Chicago, meeting with Jimmy De Castro about joining "The Content Factory" as the 6-10 a.m. counterpoint to the syndicator's Dan Patrick Show.

Bruno's "try out" was filling in during DP's recent vacation.

The lineup of stations will parallel Patrick's network, including KNBR/1050:

Good for Tony if that is truly the case. Though, I would assume it would be 6am-9am b/c Patrick starts at 9am ET. So, this means Tony will air in the overnight hours on the west coast? I guess it's better than no gig. He's too good to have put himself in this situation.

The announcement from Tony Bruno on this morning's Gary Radnich Show: Bruno is hoping to return to the nationally-syndicated airwaves beginning on October 1.

It will be a nighttime show.

No word on whether it'll be heard on KNBR/1050 yet, according to Bruno.
