Why No Classic TV variety Shows

bpatrick said:
Red Skelton once said that his CBS shows (which constitute 17 of his 20
years on television) would never be shown again; he was that bitter over
the cancellation in 1970. Consequently, what has turned up on PBS and on
infomercials consists of comedy bits from the 1951-53 and 1970-71 NBC shows.
...not quite -- KERA-TV/13, Dallas' PBS outlet, ran some of the kinescoped CBS shows from the '50s ten years ago...

...over the years, there have been PBS repackagings of the Nat "King" Cole and Tennessee Ernie Ford variety shows, which I suspect may still be available. KVCR in San Bernardino is currently running a set of filmed Guy Lombardo shows, and I'm pretty sure that, if any station (most likely PBS) would be interested, Liberace's wildly popular syndicated show from 1954-55 can still be gotten...

last I heard, RFD is available only on Direct TV. Or has that changed?

Last I know, it's still available on Dish Network, FTA satellite, and selected cable systems (mainly in rural parts of the country, though Verizon Fios offers it to everyone).

Time Warner has been offering RFD-TV to more of their systems over the last few years..Cleveland/Akron/Canton Ohio has had it the last couple years at least..

...but not in Los Angeles County...

VH1 was running 1/2 hour shows featuring Ed Sullivan's rock and roll guests for awhile; I think syndicated through Andrew Sorkin. I've watched the boxes sets of all the Sullivan shows The Beatles and Elvis appeared on (including the first Elvis appearance hosted by Charles Laughton).
