Why no Triple-AAA in Brewer and Bangor anymore?

There used to be one back in the 90's up there. Currently the only Commercial Triple-AAA format in the Pine Tree State is 98.9 WCLZ. Which is strange and sad because that would seem like a really good market for an "Independent Radio Station."

As I mentioned before, in the 90's there was a big one up there (I liked it so much that I forgot the frequency and call letters, I think 92.9...not sure). But I went to camp up in the Franklin/Ellsworth area as a kid back in 1996 and 1998 and whatever it was, it was great. Of course before switching formats.

Like some of you, my adult dream is to bring back Commercial Triple-AAA back to the area. But, there's this thing...called...money.

Anyways, carry on...

Stephen King had a AAA on his Dover FM 103.1 WDME until a couple years ago when he blew it up and put started simulcasting his sports AM (then flipped the FM and eventually the AM to lib talk)

I don't remember 92.9 being AAA but I do remember then being a hell of a lot softer back in the 90's

92.9 has always been AC/soft rock oriented after it's beautiful music beginning. I think you may be thinking of 97X, one of 97.1's many incarnations.

Simply stating more money can be made in the formats that are cuurently in place in Bangor/Brewer. Had AAA been the ratings success and revenue success for whoever was doing it, it would still exist.

There are SO MANY signals in Southern Maine taht a AAA can exist. How well is this station doing really anyway?

Thank you for the clarification sir.

Although it wasn't very successful, 97X was a great station, used to love listening to that, I was real disappointed when it went away.

As I said in another recent thread just a couple days ago, 97X got decent ratings (IIRC), had an airstaff who, if not major market polished were certainly very familiar with the music, and had great phones and attendance at PAs/remotes. I just don't think advertisers were ready for that format 15 years ago. Now? Maybe.

And AFAIK there are still a lot of local Mom and Pops who will only buy on stations that play music they like, ratings be damned. I could be wrong. Been out of show biz for 3 1/2 years. What's it like out there, salespeople?

True Grit, I think you nailed it.

In Maine, where most of radio sales are local, I think the business owner has to feel comfortable with... and maybe even be a regular listener to... the radio station that's trying to sell him/her spots.

(And for the record, might I extend an olive branch for our disagreements regarding my past posts?)

Accepted.

Qualifier---in large part because I don't know who you are in IRL (as I suspect you do vis-a-vis me). Nevertheless, the hatchet, for now at least, is buried.

Cheers.

AAA sells a lot on relationship and quality of audience buying. Ratings, while nice, can be less of an issue for a true local AAA. Especially considering how suspect ratings are, in particular PPM, for that audience's lifestyle.
