My guess would be the famed 15 minute rule that the big whigs apply to the Top 40 and Urban formats. You assume your listener is listening for 15 minutes max. This gives you more tracks to repeat, ie less time to fill. Also, you are to assume that these listeners have a short attention span. Hence why you dont want long winded talk break.
The assumption that probably works for rock stations is that people not only want the music, but they're old school like yourself and like the presentation and personality of the jocks. Plus most rock stations for some reason keep the playlist unrealistically tight. Which is why it is played under the assumption that ya need to pair it up with some talk of some kind. The easiest solution is short talk breaks and expanded playlists. Which is why you're liking YSP on the weekend so much.
