Why not FREE Fm for Zone

I find it interesting that the zone from what I have read today at various sources is only picking up Corolla but will not pick up the entire Free Fm format. I wonder why infinity wants to stay put with the alternative format in phoenix but will blow up alternative in NYC come January. Hmmmmm... I would love to see the Free Fm format in phoenix, would be a breath of fresh air :)

While I agree with you that I too would love to see the Free FM format in Phoenix, I can see why Infinity might want to stick with KZON. The Zone hasn't exactly been pulling the ratings that it once did, but they still do fairly well in the important adult demos. Also outside of the morning show, KZON is cheap to operate when compared to a full blown FM talk. (I would think at least a couple of high powered local hosts would be necessary in a Free FM format in addition to the not cheap syndicated morning drive.)

Also note that the stations that Infinity announced were flipping to Free were in Top 10 markets, except San Diego. San Diego is way over radioed. I guess this might be a shot at making an impact. Plus it sounds like they will be simulcasting a lot of the KLSX programming from LA.
