Why not get a fresh slate

Alright, so you can't blame the braintrust formerly of Campbell for Liddy and Hill cancelling their own show just months after launching it (and moving to a station with 1/5 the audience to do so), but the situation at the Jolt is getting a bit tired. I'd like to root for them seeing that KNST is so bland and KVOI is, well, even more bland, but they make it so hard.

To those who complain that the Jolt gets so much attention here despite having such weak ratings, that is exactly why. A bunch of radio people who at times comprise the entire KJLL audience playing our own version of Extreme Home Makeover... after all, KIIM doesn't need our attention.

Anyway, how long is Aldona going to let this continue... disputes with WW1 forcing them to put Imus back on, a new morning show more expensive than the last one, TRN shoving Rusty Humphries down their throat, it's all a mess. With Skyler returning to the Southland, this is an opportune time to develop a real morning show. Franzi may not be the greatest talent but he's knowledgeable, known, and adds a local flavor. More than can be said for the 250-watt tower of power eminating by way of S. Richey. Heck, Charles Goyette's likely to be looking for a job again soon. Jim Sharpe is twiddling his thumbs with a weekend shift at KFYI. Maybe these candidates wouldn't make the dip to market #61, but you get the idea. Or put Glenn Beck on live at 7... he's actually free. What are they trying to be over there, a Class C FM? Turn on the Starguide and get a show on barter.

Or, why not just bring in a new crew and broker the whole thing out. KFNX South. Or liberal talk. Or something to end this painstaking drama.

BTW, is O'Reilly back for good or just until they find something else?

Although only 250 watts, KVOI's day time signal is superior to that of the Jolt. Obviously nighttime coverage is a different story with KJLL's 5kw vs. KVOI's 3 watts. However, the Jolt's nighttime coverage pattern may be part of their problem. A huge chunk of KJLL's potential audience lives on the northwest side (such as Oro Valley) of the Tucson metro area where the Jolt cannot be heard pre-sunrise and post-sunset. During times of the year when sunrise/sunset occurs during morning/evening drive time, the Jolt is essentially a day-timer on the northwest side of town. This has to impact their numbers somewhat.

Yeah, but with the crap they're running after 5:45 now, it shouldn't matter anyway. If they whored out the time, they could correctly claim to have (by way of wattage) a signal ten times stronger to that of their nearest AM competitor. Of course, it's actually only 3.162x stronger, but most people don't know that.

[Slide rule: back in pocket]

The jolt has many problems... and fixing it will be tough... but i see one of two directions they could go.

one: go live and local 5a-10p. hti 'em in the heart. "we're in touch with tucson"

5-6 newsblock with a real anchor. not some kid. not some burnt out crusty re-run.
6-9 morning show. target? lifestyle. screw the drudge report. no one wants to wake up and listen about peter abramoff. lite, lifestyle. i'm not sayign dodge the hardball, but not the borning beltway crap or lame tucson city council scene. fun is key.
9-12 okay, here you can get away with the borning emil franzi, john c scott ulm schlock. it's boring. who cares about city issues? but it's the image. we're local when knst is national. juxapose (juxtapose? sp?).
12-4 same sorta thing. hit 'em with local. we're tucson, your're not.
4-7 pm drive. similar to am drive, but more newsy. hit the big stories, but that's about it. it's okay to by light and fluffy. that's what people want. again, screw the drudge report as showprep. if people want to know that stuff, they already looked it up at work.
7-10 here's the channce to have fun. sports/food/movies/arts/what's goin on. i'd be okay with some sorts of a "wildcat fans" show here.
overnight: who cares.

two: d.i.y. radio. do all the home improvment/gardening/cleaning/car care type shows. no sydication! all local! local improvement types. tarm martina would o good here (if he'sstill around) dave ramsey would rule. it's be easy, inexpensive, and i think would be an improvemnt over the schlock they have now.

If "mboard" (see previous post) is not a PD, OM or GM he/she certainly should be. Great insight on what to do with a mom and pop pea shooter like JOLT. Somebody there should heed mboard's comments.<P ID="signature">______________

Yea, but when you're behind on a syndication bill, the network sends another invoice. When you're behind on a local salary, the host quits.

i am not a pd, om or gm. i'ma lowly radio employee. but i have learned from the best around. for now, i love doing my job. the job of a pd has changed over the years. they used to develop talent, which i think would be great. pd's these days fill out forms, sign contracts, and write liners, which are sent off to a voice guy.

i'd love to help develop talent, but i don't think that's done anymore. just look at the lack of good young radio talent. i was lucky. early in my career, i found a mentor who has been honest with me and guided me in the right direction.

That being the case I am even more impressed. If I don't already know you I hope there will come an opportunity to meet someday. I think I like you more now that you are no longer inibriated at Easter.

There's actually a funny story and a picture behind the "drunken easter bunny." yes, it does involve a glass of scotch, a prominent tucson dj and an easter bunny costume. it's sitting on my bookshelf at home. i could actually post the picutre, becasue the prominent tucson dj has the costume on... and you can't see the face. but, i'm sure the glass of scotch has already given it away.
