Why Oh Why Isn't Glenn Beck Cleared In NYC?

Reports out of D.C. this morning are that struggling "Washington Post Radio" is mulling adding syndicated programming to offset financial losses. A top exec says one name that immediately comes to mind is Glenn Beck, currently heard in the same market on tape-delay on CC-owned WTNT.

Think of the irony here: Glenn Beck's show is heard on over 200 stations, including many of the top markets. He recently got cleared in Chicago on tape delay on WCKG, and is even heard in L.A. over Arte Moreno-owned KLAA.

Yet nobody has flinched to even clear him in New York, where his radio show has been based for over a year upon the start of his CNN Headline News program.

Why is the New York market so biased against Glenn Beck? I know WABC won't fix what ain't broken, but how much of CC's conventional wisdom would it take to pay also-ran WOR to air the show, on tape-delay or otherwise?

Beck isn't on in market one because? The answer seems obvious. He ain't that good. Sure, he's syndicated, he's on TV, but really, is he doing anything so compelling and so unique that he's a "must have" in a station's line-up, especially in markey #1? You can make an argument for WOR picking him up, but apparently WOR doesn't think he's be an asset.

Why should he be cleared in New York? Most syndicated shows are not cleared in New York.

For example, the following are on Talkers' list of Top Talk Radio Audiences, with cumes exceeding One Million, despite not being cleared in the Big Apple ....
Mike Gallagher
Neil Boortz
Jim Bohannon
Bill Bennett
Jerry Doyle
Dave Ramsey
Ed Schultz
Michael Medved
Rusty Humphries
Lars Larson
G. Gordon Liddy
Mancow
Bill Handel
Hugh Hewitt
Dean Edell
Stephanie Miller
Michael Reagan

Others are cleared in New York but delayed to late night ....
Laura Ingrham
Jim Rome

99% of the names you listed aren't even in major market Philly. However, Glenn beck is heard there live on clear channel 1210 AM WPHT at 9AM.

I thought the deal with his show being moved to NYC for CNN Headline News was contingent on his radio show being cleared in the market? Whoops!

Since when does that make any difference? Hannity isn't that good and he ORIGINATES from NY. For crying out loud, the DOLANS were on in NY for many years, and theirs was about as awful as a show could get.

You make a helluva good point on Hannity... maybe it has something to do with "looks." Y'know, Hannity be the slick lookin' telegenic camera puppet that he is. Set sarcasm detecter to [on].

Good points made about Hannity vs. Beck. I like Hannity - seems like a nice guy, BUT his radio show is boooooring. He's far better on TV than radio. Too often it sounds like he is just repeating bullet lists (of talking points) over and over again.

Glenn Beck, on the other hand, is entertaining and provides something different on the radio. His listenership surpasses any of the shows on Al Johnson's list (he's #3 now). I disagree with the poster who said that he was unlistenable - that's simply a cheap shot. The guy's show is original and it's good. Interesting perspectives too. When traveling to NY from the south, I find myself straining to hear him on WPHT's not so good 50 kw signal. He's preferable to the local talk fare offered on NY Radio.

I suspect the problem with New York is a relative lack of AM talk signals for him to be on. Basically, its WABC or WOR. WABC has committments in the morning; not sure what the deal is on WOR. So, Beck is the odd man out. Compare this with LA, where he joins Michael Savage on KLAA, where there are 3 or 4 options in LA for a syndicated show like Glenn Beck's.

Glenn Beck does an amazing show and is a helluva nice guy to boot. When Rush retires, Premiere would be foolish not to move him into the noon-3 slot.

Drive into CT or out to Long Island and you can catch him on New Haven's 960 WELI.
