Why People Care About Public Radio's Future But Not Public TV

"Car Talk" is the only thing I care about. I don't even know how I got started listening. I think it was the puzzlers. But I like their attitude about just about everything, and not just cars. Leaving the radio on their show helped me discover "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me", which I could enjoy listening to but just don't have the time for, and "A Prairie Home Companion", which I was surprised to discover I liked (parts of it, anyway). again, I don't listen unless I happen to be in the car at that time.

I believe that plenty of people care about public TV's future.

All you need to say is that "the government is going to cancel Elmo and everyone else on Sesame Street" and there will be plenty of people calling some 212 area code number and chewing on someones' ears that Congress had better not defund Elmo.

You can name any other public TV show, or even public radio show, and you will not get the amount of emotional attachment that Sesame Street has in the American psyche.

Plus Sesame Street is older than PBS itself, and has updated itself and kept relevant through the years.
