Why Reality TV Is On Life Support

Some of this is the shifting landscape of the media and viewing habits of the audience thats at play here.

For the waiting workforce, development and production haven’t picked up much since then. “I’ve worked in this industry for 20 years, and all of a sudden the faucet just turned off,” says producer Patrick Caligiuri (Naked and Afraid, American Idol), who has posted multiple times to his TikTok since March about the struggles of entertainment workers. (His first post, emblazoned “Reality TV is dead,” took off on LinkedIn, racking up over 2,000 likes and nearly 300 comments.)

“It’s not just people who just moved to L.A. to get into the business that can’t find jobs,” adds one veteran reality TV producer. “It’s somebody who’s been working for 25 years and has a résumé that I would kill for who’s saying they haven’t worked in a year.”

Many veteran unscripted producers and sellers, who asked to remain anonymous in a bid to protect future sales, say the downturn is mirroring what’s happening in the scripted TV space as budgets there, too, are being squeezed across the board, and especially on broadcast. Unscripted shows, which historically have been cheaper to make and faster to produce, are feeling the same fiscal pinch as their scripted counterparts as media companies right-size their slates and spending. “It’s the same problem as scripted, and it’s really depressing,” says one veteran reality executive.

Shows like Shark Tank are still appointment viewing because of the great products featured (and the dogfights between Mr. Wonderful and the other sharks). Others...not so much. If the Bachelorette or Bachelor finally ended their runs, my mom wouldn't know what to do on the other hand.

A bit…ok a lot…of hyperbole in the article, but the real point is buried in there: it’s TV as a whole. ABC’s fall schedule is mostly unscripted, and they have several more shows in mid season.

The stalwarts continue to do as well as can be expected for a veteran show of any type in the larger context. Survivor, Idol, the Voice…they all continue to deliver a decent return on investment.

Whatever is happening to Warner Brothers and its various entities under the Discovery umbrella isn’t about unscripted shows, it’s about a fundamental change in their business.

The streamers are in the unscripted game. Some literally in “games” (pop culture Jeopardy, the 1% Club).

The gravy train is leaving the station for everyone, but there are a plethora of unscripted shows and outlets.

OK how about another one if one wants to watch "Reality TV" they can find it on Twitch and on YouTube. Also we call the people on the show Iinfluencers in those cases. It's not going away but it's shifting to other places.

Most "reality" TV was not/is not reality.
And? Most people outside trade outlets and boards like this also don't use the term. And it doesn't matter. People like what they like, whether it's scripted or not. It's easy slang to create one bucket that encompasses a whole lot of variations. But that requires nuance and understanding.

As with any form of entertainment, success brings competition / copycats etc. After the "peak" of popularity it's a race to the bottom.

IMHO: with the relative low cost of entry, the quality is only going to get worse.

Reality TV will always be around no matter what and isn't going away, I like reality TV been a fan for many decades since the 90s with Real World, Road Rules, to American Idol, I use to watch The Voice the first few seasons haven't watched it in years.

What is this "reality TV" you speak of? I've heard the term for the last 25 years or so, but have yet to watch even one of these so-called "shows" over that time. This is something I am quite proud of, BTW. ;)

Considering it’s been part of TV since the very start, it is indeed here for the long haul. The executions change just like scripted shows do.

Why is "Reality TV" on life support??

Two words - TRUE CRIME

"Nuff said

I saw an article just yesterday with comments from participants in so-called "reality" shows. The bottom line is virtually all of them are scripted or produced for predetermined results.
