Why so negative? Just calling 'em like I see 'em!

I don't know who you are and don't care but your always so down on Curtis. What gives? My friends at both ZTK and SJS are pretty happy with what's come down. You slam WPTF and other news operations without giving any props for even DOING news. As a former manager for Clear Channel, I can tell you I'd still be in the business if I had the chance to work for an outfit like Curtis. Also, you should know that AP is the only network that doesn't require network barter inventory which is why lots of smart operators use it. Most large stations that use AP pay cash for it so they don't have to give up spots to network commercials. I don't know if Curtis barters or not, but my guess is they do not. Why not give them credit for not only surviving in the consolidated world but actually thriving? What the hell is your beef? Are you Ralph Shaw?

I didn't even notice this until today. It seems a bit odd someone would take me to task privately on a public board.

A couple of points.

I am NOT down on Curtis. They are obviously making a commitment to news at WPTF, let's hope they continue in their new venture.

After nearly 3 decades in broadcast news, I call 'em like I see 'em. I remember what some of these stations have done in the past and also know what they COULD be doing. Listen to WBT lately? Now THAT'S what radio news should be!

AP also takes barter, even for their wire service. "Guess" they don't? Unless you know, your guess is about as good as anybody else's.

My friends at WSJS are NOT happy about what's coming down. They're going from working for one of the premiere broadcast and news organizations in the world (CBS), to working for a local/statewide operator, with questions about their future and the continued commitment to their product. Despite its success, CMG doesn't have anywhere near the resources that CBS has.

Of course the people at WZTK are happy. They'll be moving in with WSJS (and get out of a building that several staffers have told me is "a dump") and will benefit from its news department. WZTK positions itself be news/talk, but from what I can hear, their news is basically rip and read. I NEVER hear any local tape or reports from the field on their air. However, they do have a topical, well-prepared, entertaining morning show. It's good radio. And adding WSJS's news to that will make it even better.

You "don't care" who I am, yet ask if I'm Ralph Shaw. You're contradicting yourself. But, no, I'm not Ralph. Last I noticed, Ralph was using the handle Dr. News on this very board.

A lesson in spelling: it's "you're" for "you are," not "your," which is possesive.

And finally: if you're so high on Curtis, what's stopping you from working for them? Call them up and take your shot.

Hey, the "your" "you're" thing may seem trivial to you, but it drives me CRAZY! :-*

Why bother....

What, don't have enough moxy to take on someone publicly? Probably why you're no longer in the business.

As for the other comment about language: I couldn't resist a shot at someone who took offense because my opinions differed from theirs. And if someone doesn't even know correct word usage, then how much credibilty should we give to their opinions about more weighty matters?

Touche! Typical typo -- a case of the brain moving faster than the fingers. I actually know how to correctly spell credibility!

I've worked with some of the upper management at Curtis and have respect for their passion and knowledge of radio. Tom Hamilton...not so much. I think WSJS will be far better off than in the past with Tom's greed slowly turning them into a has-been. He has no idea of how to manage people. I personally know several employees who were treated in a very undignified manner by Tom Hamilton. What he did to them was mean and completely unnecessary. Life has a way of eventually giving you back what you've given to others.

I've also heard some stories. If you look at the station's history the past seven years or so, there's been a exodus of many experienced, top-notch employees. Could there be a connection?

Of course there's a connection. Tom's a problem. And, in my opinion, that's part of the problem with the larger companies. There can be an idiot at the helm of the local group and all of the employees can be suffering because of it (yet continue to do the best job they can because they love the industry), and whoever is over the idiot has no contact with the other station employees, so it goes on and on until the idiot runs off the better people and eventually it starts showing up in the bottom line. When you have local owners, they wind up coming to the station from time to time and eventually, someone rats out the idiot (or several people do) and the problem gets solved. That's assuming, of course, that you have a competent owner(s). I'm speaking from experience here...I've worked for the big group and the individual owners.

;D Is there a problem with everyone named "Tom"? Hmmmmm! Just an observation!

The decision to replace Mike Fenley with BA was a terrible one and ultimately cost CBS several million dollars in value. Maybe Hamilton will now be paid back by Curtis for saving them bucks.
