To answer the question why 106.1 rates higher than 105.3 is that it has a tighter playlist for the regional mexican format. I personally don't have the ear to confirm nor deny that, but I heard WOLS concentrates on 20 top songs while WNOW has a wider playlist. Could be songs that 'test well'.
WNOW probably does well in that it has a coverage area that 106.1, and 103.9 in Greenville, don't have. there are significant latino communities in Hickory, Morganton, etc. where this is probably the only good FM signal for Spanish music.
102.3 plays a more Tropical/Spanish Pop format. A very weak signal, plus the fact that the younger latinos, likely 2nd generation, are probably more inclined to listen to the English top 40 and Urban stations like their black and white peers. That is just a thought why they probably don't rate like their counterparts.
I cannot speak for the AM stations but only to suggest they fill a niche just like local community English speaking talk and Christian stations do. No ratings blockbusters, but filling a need somewhere.
That said, I wouldn't be surprised if a couple of those frequencies go back to speaking English sometime in the near future.
