Why Stern will take the listeners with him

I like Stern and I also like Preston and Steve. However, after Stern's show on Wednesday regarding Artie Lang potentially leaving the show, there is no doubt Stern provides a brand of radio entertainment that is not heard anywhere else and makes a show like Preston and Steve seem bush league. Did anyone else hear it on Wednesday. Amazing radio.

I heard parts of it. The all time most compelling radio I have ever heard was Stern on 9/11. It was incredible...I was watching the events on tv with the sound down and listening to him...I mean if it wasn't such a terrible day I would try to find recordings of it.

Stern is the Babe Ruth of radio. I am sure that during Babe Ruth's era there were elitests that thought the home run was for brutes and tarnished a skilled mans game. But, once Ruth was done I am sure that the same people would have given just about anything to watch that fat boozer trot around the bases one more time. Same thing with Stern. There will be an enormous void when he's gone.

1986 I thought a syndicated FM talk show in mornings was the dumbest thing ever...nikki hoy everybody! A week later I was hooked. Yes, it's toilet humor with fart jokes and porn stars and a creepy old dude hitting on strippers and I have to turn it off once in a while when it's too much...but if you think about it, if it wasn't for Stern, Preston and Steve would have no act. It's almost the same show in principle, just diluted and local and Stern doesn't have a voice guy any more. No offense to P&S, just being real here.

But, I do not think that Stern's audience goes with him. I am not about to spend $12.99 a month when I can find something almost as entertaining for free. I think that Stern's audience just sort of goes away. No one station will gain a significant portion of Sterns audience. Water finds it's level. Same with radio audiences.

Where did the Y100 listener go? Well, 400,000 people did not just go to WMMR. So where did they go? Exactly. Some of them went away, or simply didn't settle in one particular place, and some went to YSP, and Q and Wired and Power and WIP and WSTW and and and...me, I am listening to Stern, P&S and Star and Buc equally in the morning and then WIP, WFAN and WPHT on the ride home. And once Stern is gone I will probably split time between P&S and S&B.

Lastly, for those of you that don't care for Stern that's fine with me, different strokes for different folks. But those of you that will not acknowledge that he is the most influential man to ever crack a mic are kidding yourselves.

He is the King of All Media...besides, how many radio guys do you know get paid $500,000,000?
Edited by Wexler on 07/29/05 02:37 AM.

The king is dead...long live the Queen! Let's be honest, Stern has had a LONG beautiful and entertaining run...but lately...VERY BORING! He has an occasional great show..but for the most part..bitch and complain..bitch and complain and promote sirius. His cutting edge shows have been few and far between. I for one welcome something new. Anyone remember the Opie and Anthony fiasco? O & A where are you...oh that's right...satillite! After a few failure morning show replacements... we will all settle in on the "new" king of all media.

I could not agree more, lately I have found Stern so tiring.
I have said for the last few years, that he mails it in. no preparation.
He was so much better when he had competition,
How many times a week does he bring in girls and just sit there and salivate?
Or complain about the FCC, or Tom or Gary?
Its old...He was better when he was married to his wife and miserable.
Also Stern is all about Stern, He bithes on and on and about the FCC but the real truth is he is leaving for one reason.......MONEY!!
On the flip side I like Preston and Steve on a personal level but I
think their morning show is lame.

But isn't that true with so many greats? They never know when it's time to hang them up? I just watched a piece on HBO about Mickey Mantle. Same thing. How about Steve Carlton? Joe Montana? Guys that ended their career performing at half of their level that made them great...Stern is the same thing. I am not saying that Stern provides compelling radio all the time. What I am saying is that even at half pace Stern is still better than anything else around, and maybe that's more on memories and reputation where the audience is hoping to see just one more trot around the bases.

Again, Stern is the Babe Ruth of Radio.

...the local college/non-commercial stations, the internet, XM/Sirius, their person iPods and CD collections...who knows, maybe even setting up a FM pirate as we speak...

I agree. P&S seem like O.K. guys but their show is lame. There's only one Stern and even on his off days he's more compelling than anything else on the dial right now.

Now, an FM pirate that played "true" alternative would be cool..."Someone" needs to leak that info on this board if it ever comes to fruition...or if it is already around and I haven't heard of it yet...

It's not about the MONEY..
I believe Stern wants the Freedom to do a show with no censorship.
He doesn't like having to watch his mouth as if kids were around.

He's made plenty of money..Stern gets off doing good bits..making people laugh.
When your bits are edited which amounts to changing the whole concept..
It can get frustrating..

As a writer myself..knowing the limits of Radio...you have to remember what can be aired and cannot according to the FCC.

I think word of mouth from Stern's listeners who will buy a Sirius Satelite radio (along with media publicity)..will get more people to listen.
Cable TV was costly at first.. I have cable and internet access (cheaper than AOL was)with Comcast.
And now Comcast says they will be adding phones in the future.

A funny note about who buys cable tv..
A friend of mine's wife worked for Social Services in Virgina a few years back and people who were getting food stamps or welfare were asking her if they could get their Cable TV bill paid....

LOL
