Why Sunny will not go talk

There are many rumors circulating claiming WSNI going talk soon, this does not make any sense. They are cheap to run, Tesh was just put on board, they do well in their demo and why would CC put another talker in the market, when YSP will probably go full talk in 2006. If someone would say Alternative or Active after the demise of YSP, that might hold some water, although I cannot see Tesh talking up AC/DC or Alice in Chains. BTW, does anyone else think WSNI sounds good with the Christmas songs by Classic Standard artists they are featuring. IMHO, they would sound good as a Standards station, yeh, I know skews too old, advertisers et al. Why sales people think a young format with a 2.0 is more lucrative than a older format with a 4.0 is beyond my comprehension, us old geezers spend money too.

I have a feeling that Sunny 104.5, even with its lowly standing in the all-important 12+ numbers (LOL), makes more money for Clear Channel than CC could get by trying to put an Active Rocker on there (especially since I assume one of the existing Rock stations will pick up the WYSP slack).

I definitely don't see CC trying to do Alternative here. Wouldn't make any sense to replace an automated revenue-maker with something Radio One wasn't satisfied with here after years and years of trying. (There's no way anyone here could possibly assert that Y100 made more money than Sunny. Well, not with a straight face anyway.)

The only reason I could see CC replacing Sunny with a Hot Talk station would be if they were trying to build a Hot Talk network and they felt the need to have market #6 involved. Of course, I still think they'd do it on Q102 before they'd do it on Sunny.

Sunny is playing a great variety but they're repeating the most popular songs in such a heavy rotation that it's actually driving me nuts. I am very glad to hear B101 joining the fray because I needed some variety and B101 is playing songs Sunny won't go near. Variety is good.

Now I'm a little sick of both of them though and I'm listening to the Christmas songs on my hard drive. Lots of stuff neither of them would touch!

Happy Holidays!

I love Holiday music, but I will not listen to it in early November, when the temperatures are still in the 70's. Then the temp dropped last week. Okay, it was not Black Friday yet, but I still gave Sunny a try. Couldn't believe it. I was finally getting to hear the artists I miss: Dino, Mathis, Anne Murray. The standards singers I love that you don't hear anyplace else. So I started listening just to hear the voices, if nothing else.

I agree, the variety is not as great as I would like. But I tried the "B". It is still mostly the "soft" rock that I don't really care for.

As for 104.5 going talk. Why? A major money maker with low expenditures now, why go to a high cost format?

(I assume one of the existing Rock stations will pick up the WYSP slack). LOL, the only other choice is the half @$$ed rock station MMR, which still sounds like a train wreck. Maybe 97.5 when moved in-market might try it, then you have chicken rocker MGK, which is scared to play anything outside of Joel, Eagles, Mac, Elton, Queen, Heart, you know the safe chicken stuff.

Speaking Of YS-FREE-FM

Musings on a rainy afternoon...

What if this "FREE-FM" thing falls flat on its kiester? One or two books and...splat! Would they then return to Rock? Would they modify the formatics to be a mish-mosh of HotTalk/Music...maybe 50/50 within the dayparts?

Eagles have imploded for this year...no excitement there for FREE. Nobody currently on-air at YS-FREE-FM even approaches Howard in any department. The shows are still in the building stages.

Was the flip to the FREE-FM thingy an ill-advised move? By the end of the Spring Book...someone within Infinity could be taking a second look at the future, huh.

Meantime, seems that "King Of The Rock Stations" is MMR's title to lose, IMHO.

Well, okay. LOL. However people may feel about the existing Rock stations, it doesn't change the fact that I'm assuming one of them will pick up the WYSP slack.

What is your issue with MMR? You seem to bash them every chance you get. I think there should be some respect for a station that hasn't changed format for over 30 years. I'm new to the area and I always thought MMR had a better mix of rock than YSP. Being 26 I would be right up (the former) YSP's ally, demo wise, but I was never interested in what they were offering. I just don't feel that modern rock has anything to offer, or at least enough to program a station around. When the music gets better the stations will come around.

There are so many negative points about MMR, I could fill pages. I have known them from day one, in 1967 with the Marconi experiment and Mr. Goodman. They were going to change format in the 70's, there were so many protests they decided not to flip. There was a large article in the Philadelphia magazine covering it, people flooded Rittenhouse Square, if anyone still has that article, its a rare print. My problem with them, they play TOO much Classic Rock, why would you play the Doors and Young when sister MGK is doing the same. You have to listen to jocks that yak and yak, and this dinosaur (I should talk LOL), in the mid-days should be on MGK or put to rest. He does not know when to stop, do we really want to hear about Jerry Garcia for the million-th time, the music is all over the place, Nirvanna to Squeeze and Metallica to Bruce to Offspring. If you heard YSP before Kidd came on board, you would know what Active Rock is all about. You can still hear Matt and Huggy who can blow anything MMR plays out of the water. If YSP would just play music after Dynamite Dave's shift is over, then we would have a decent Rock station to listen to, MMR is not my station, when I want to listen to Rock.

Re: Speaking Of YS-FREE-FM

I wouldn't be surprised if FREE-FM fails, or at least fails in some markets. I think a lot of radio is just in an identity crisis and is trying to reinvent itself to compete with satellite and online stuff. Someday, I hope everyone will discover that the one advantage radio will always have is that its local ... and people like local things. I see FREE-FM (and a lot of Jack stations) not really taking advantage of that.
If FREE-FM fails, I think they'll get rid of the Hot Talk altogether. It's all or nothing!
