"WHY TERRESTRIAL RADIO WILL NEVER BE GREAT AGAIN" ARTICLE

So. Just so I'm clear...

The entire medium is doomed, based upon the debt service of one company?

Just checking...

And OTA radio is supposed to be afraid of satellite? I thought that myth had been quashed years ago. Satellite reaches about 20 million subscribers, most only in the car, while one company reaches well over 200 million at home and at work, too.

Don't forget about the internet. I heard that with the advent of internet radio, over the air broadcasting was doomed. Five years, maybe ten years down the road there wouldn't even be any more traditional radio stations.

Of course I heard that about 15 years ago, so take it with a grain of salt...

Excellent article. I know people in radio have a hard time believing, for instance, that it is perfectly normal for radio stations to play something from Boston's first album (almost 40 years old ?) a few times a day and that is what people want to hear.

Firstly, I didn't mean to be "gloom & doom" by posting this article...I just meant to post an article about radio in a radio forum.

And secondly, radiobum, it's interesting that you should say what you did, because yesterday I had a chance to be a passenger in a car as opposed to the driver, and I took the opportunity to scan the entire FM dial. I did this for about 10 mins or so. The only station (that plays new music) that was playing something new was KEZ. It was kinda pathetic...just a bunch of retreads!
I don't know if it's just Phoenix, but we really need to freshen it up!

Side note, when we got to the restaurant, we sat down and a guy sitting at an adjacent table was p*ssin' and moanin' to his friends about "the lobotimization of his favorite station, 103.9." He couldn't believe that "the station was moving backwards and why the hell would anyone #1, play, or #2 want to listen to "We Built This City On Rock & Roll?!"
He then said, "Isn't anyone at that station aware that song was voted worst of all time?!"

Armchair market research. ;)

That song has special meaning for anyone growing up in the 60's in S.F. Other people don't get it.

If CC ran its stations the way XM Sirius ran its company, it would make tons more money.

This guy doesn't understand how radio works. Or what makes radio great.
