Why UC Games to FM?

Just wondering why the UC games are shuffled onto WEBN when WLW has the Reds' games rather than onto WCKY? While 'EBN has a nice in-town FM signal, it certainly doesn't have the distance that 'CKY has - even in the daytime. While I certainly don't place much importance on a pre-season baseball game over a college basketball game in March, I understand the contractual agreement that makes it happen. You'd just think the owners of WLW/WCKY/WEBN would want to get it onto the best signal possible when the other 50,000 watt outlet is available (and for this afternoon - it is availalbe since the University of Kentucky, whoose games they pick up, doesn't play until Sunday). Just some thoughts.

My guess is UC doesn't want people fumbling all over the dial to find their game. If it's not on WLW, then it is on WEBN. They don't want to have a list of third or fourth alternate stations.

People may give up if they can't find the game after a couple tries and UC and the advertisers don't want to lose the money. Although I think with the internet readily available, most people would look up the station before they tune in!

I think you hit it on the head ... WEBN has a nice *in town* signal, and the majority of the UC fanbase is in Hamilton County. It drops off quite a bit once you get away from Cincinnati itself.

Sorry. I can't agree. If it was so, I doubt WLW would carry UC games. When the team is doing well - like this season - there is definite increase in interest in alumni alone and that includes people in many states to say nothing of basketball fans in general. Another problem is when the games are off of WLW, it also prevents the ability to receive the streaming audio of them via the Big One's webpage.

I see your point but don't completely agree. It makes total sense that UC games are on WLW. I also think it makes sense for them to be on WEBN when bumped rather than WCKY or even WKRC. I stand by my point that the majority of the UC (and Xavier) fan base is within 25-30 miles of Cincinnati, if for no other reason than OSU and Kentucky hem them in once you get too far out of the metro area.

The contract with the Reds specifies that they (Reds) can't be bumped to another station for other programming, but I don't know why the other AM stations weren't an option.

The Louisville game was on 1530. U of L pays big money for 1530 to be the affiliate.

If I were UC, I think I'd rather have my game placed on an FM station with over 400,000 listeners than an AM with about 150,000. Better exposure. Not that difficult to figure out. I don't think WEBN's coverage is an issue.

At times, the Louisville games are aired on 1360-AM. That is usually when something else is being carried on 1530 - such as U.K. games. I mentioned UC on 1530-AM because of the signal strength. While yesterday's Bearcats' game was during the day, 'CKY's night-time signal reaches many states. Even its daytime reach is pretty good. Again, just some thoughts. Everyone's comments are interesting, appreciated and, most of all, are respected.

One concern with WCKY would be its pretty bad groundwave coverage. I think some parts of the suburbs have trouble hearing it at night because of groundwave/skywave cancellation issues.
I can't believe Louisville nabbed 1530. Who in Cincinnati cares that much about Louisville? Kentucky, I understand.

Louisville is really interested in Eastern KY, parts of Cincinnati are bonus.

Radio locator just shows the “ground wave”:

In the real world, 1530AM throws a lot of signal into Eastern KY at night. U. of L. would be a hard sell in Eastern Kentucky for a local station with the Lexington campus of Kentucky, but there are a lot of Louisville alumni in Eastern KY. Also, any kind of media exposure of good for recruiting.
