Why was the thread about defunding Public Radio locked?

I haven't read every post, but the ones I have I've found to be respectful and informative. Both sides of the issue were thoughtfully expressed with good detail.

The future of Public Radio is an important radio topic, especially right now, and this well managed forum generally allows free speech.

What happened?

Gotcha, thanks. The existing posts didn't look like a problem so I guess the deleted ones explains it. It's a shame that a very topical radio subject can't be discussed here.

It can be discussed, but if people cannot keep personal politics out of a thread where it devolves into attacks it will be locked.

When post deletions and warnings don't get the message across, I would prefer if threads that get too hot were simply locked for a few days, rather than being permanently closed. Then they could be unlocked after things had time to cool off. There's no sense in punishing all the participants of a good thread by permanently shutting it down over the actions of a minority. Does XenForo not allow this? I believe you once explained that it doesn't allow the re-opening of threads that have auto-closed due to age, but this is different.

It's not a software issue, but a time issue. The moderators here are all volunteers with many other issues going on to be manually opening and closing threads. That's why we're mostly relying on reported posts. Like right now @fybush and I are in Las Vegas for the NAB Show and all the ancillary events going on that we build our businesses around. We're not going to be sitting around thinking, oh its been X number of days, time to let this thread be reopened so that flamewars can start again.

Some threads (like this one) naturally just run their course too and its people going in circles.
