......... remember this when you think no ones listening or there isnt a relationship with our listeners. ..... lemme share something with you.
I announced 3 weeks ago that February 6th would be my last day at KSKO and I've recently announced that thanks to technology I'll be voicetracking the morning show from the lower 48.

I have an elder who is a very very regular listener and caller to KSKO.. calling at least twice a day every day to request a song... she's absolutely beside herself that I'm leaving KSKO Full time today.... and when I say beside herself, that's an understatement.... she's destroyed, you can hear the unmistakable sadness and loneliness in her voice
We at KSKO are as much her family as her actual family is. I got to meet her when we took an airplane ride to some other communities we serve about 150 miles away. She had no idea we were coming and I showed up at her house and she had no idea what I looked like but when she answered the door and I started speaking, you should've seen her face light up, she recognized my voice immediately.

She is an absolute sweetheart, thinks the world of KSKO and the people involved while we are her outlet to the world. Us DJ's are "My Paul", "My Hayley", "Miss Candace" to her.

She has TV, but its often turned on yet volume is down. The radio is on all the time. She knows us, she trusts us.
I told her very briefly, that I'd be hosting the morning show thanks to technology from the lower 48 starting Feb 16th.. but I didn't spend so much time on it because she'd never grasp how or why.

Bessie is the perfect person to keep in your mind when we imagine our average listener and the reason why we do what we do.

Damn fine story there, SRG. I can relate with a few of my own personal experiences, but, just as you stated, it's good hometown folks like this lady who make the oftentimes cuss-inducing career choice all worth it.

The money of radio is in the big city. The heart of it, and the resulting love of the community that it conjures, glaringly remains in these little one horse towns.

Radio has its issues but i dont work for stations who arent the heartbeat of the community or arent trying to be that in a sea of competition

It's good to remember, though, that not everyone in the business has the luxury of being choosy about who they'll work for.

of course, trust me.. i realize how lucky i am... to often be able to be choosy and that im still doing what i like. that fact is never lost on me even if it appears that isnt true

Sure you do, but not everyone is willing to take the decrease in pay. I left money on the table leaving Houston, but I regained my sanity and the love of the medium and gig. Mostly because of the relationships like Paul mentioned in his original post. We can engage our audience, have meaningful banter with them, and be the go-to source for the what's going on in and around town currently. That and, well, I love my owner.

What SRG speaks of is real radio, not that liner reading, monotonous, lifeless, mortuary-esque grind required by the big broadcasting conglomerates.

I hope you got to take photos with her the time you brushed shoulders, as your and her personal keepsakes. She sounds like the kind of memorable person you'll especially appreciate having a token of a very long time from now, when KSKO is only a fading memory for you.
