Why were there no weather reports from the WAVE staff on Tuesday?

All Tuesday afternoon the weather reports were read by Meiners or the newsreader at the end of the news report. Despite several NWS automated weather warnings, Belski was on duty at the station, but never heard on the radio. What gives? Seems strange.

Maybe some technical issue? I listened this morning, and heard WAVE's Kristie Dutton just like always.

Possibly, but I have heard them give reports by telephone in the past. I also thought I would tune into WAVE Listens this morning to see a farewell to Belski like they did for Wills, and so far nothing. Cindi Sullivan is at some spa hawking its beneifts. It would have been nice to have had a similar program for Belski who has been with the station for a couple decades.

I would just like to wonder how many DVR's are set to record the 5, 5:30 and 6PM newscasts tonight.

I know mine is.

Maybe Belski was too busy on his CORE job at WAVE3 to be chatting on the radio with Meiners???

Since WHAS broke ties with channel 11, severe weather coverage has gone to crap. I, for one, do not depend on them anymore since I have now realized there weather coverage is based on how busy the WAVE guys are at the time.

WAVE has a responsibility to provide weather coverage to WHAS. Maybe Belski was tired of doing this. I hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

You don't have any live local weather on radio in Louisville any more. Just the automated NOAA weather alerts that usually have country music playing in the background (at least they did on 1450). I listen to WLW out of Cincinnati as I get better weather coverage for Lousiville from there, sad isn't it?

It would be said if it were true. But it's not true.

Greg, outside of the WAVE live updates during morning and afternoon drive at :20 and :50, where are the live local weather updates? AFAIK, everything else is recorded. Belski/Schulz used to do one with Joe Elliott at 10:20 each evening, and Schulz used to do one with Doug McElvin back on the midday program round 12:45pm, but that's all history.

I don't know if it's live, but Weinburg and Emmick from WDRB do weather segments on SFR and 103.9, as well as simulcast during Jefferson county tornado warnings.

It's not live. WDRB's weather segments are heard throughout the day on all four Cox stations. The Mainline stations carry WHAS-TV weather segments throughout the day and WHAS radio airs WAVE's weather segments. I am not sure if any other Clear Channel station airs any weather segments from WAVE. The only CC station I listen to is WHAS and occasionally WKJK. I105.3 WMPI-FM from Scottsburg, Indiana also carries WAVE-TV weather updates.

Well, sometimes it is live, at least on the Cox stations and I'm sure on the others as well. And WAVE still has live weather on WHAS at times.

But with all these meteorologists doing all this weather on local radio, what's the difference if it's live or carted up from an hour before? You think every station in town wasn't putting weather on carts 20 years ago? And most of that came from the AP teletype. The ones that didn't had the TV guys doing it, and don't you think they carted that up too? Of course they did.

But let's keep in mind what Storrs said:

First of all, that's BS, and second of all, it sounds to me like the only station he ever heard was 1450, because who else would play country music in the background of a tornado warning?

1. Not WQNU
2. Not WRKA
3. Not LAMZ

[/quote]I find that these cart updates tend to be 3-4 hours old or more, and I know the weather I hear on Saturday mornings with Ron and Mel has to be at least from the night before since WAVE TV has no news prodcut then. My point is I used to pick a station where I knew weather would be updated in case of emergencies with people I trust. When I hear the automated feed from the NWS, and not local updates, I begin to wonder how good the product is. I guess I was spoiled over the years by the updates Chuck Taylor or Ken Schulz used to do. I know they did carted news, but I also have heard stories from DJs that dealt with Taylor who if he walked into the studio wwith a weather bulletin, it was his show. There was a degree of professionalism that I feel is missing today. If he could do it 30 years ago, why can't it be done today?

Because the world is very fundamentally different today from 30 years ago?

Just guessing here, but I seriously doubt there's a radio station or television station in the market that enjoys anywhere near the staff or the budget (adjusted for inflation) that it had 30 years ago.

First of all, 30 years ago there were only 2 or maybe 3 radio stations in the whole market that had a meteorologist on staff- WHAS, WAVE, and maybe WAMZ.

Second, you can bet that Chuck Taylor and Tom Wills made sure TV was covered before they did radio.

Meanwhile, everyone else that did "live weather" either did rip and read from AP or UPI, or had some service out of town that did weather over the phone.

You may remember Bill Bailey and Reed Yadon on the real WAKY? Reed would say, "from our direct line to the National Weather Service....", and then read whatever it was that they got from NWS. And that was a really big deal. 30 years ago.

And the NWS and pretty much everybody else updated their weather forecasts every 4-6 hours, or more often if the situation called for it. Not really much different than what most everyone is still doing today.

I'm the first to admit that radio isn't what it used to be. And I applaud WLW for doing what a lot more stations ought to be doing- being live almost round the clock. It clearly pays off for them and I wish more owners would pay attention to that.

But to say that you get better coverage of Louisville weather from a Cincinnati radio station than from any Louisville station just doesn't have any basis in fact.

Other than WHAS, most everyone else is doing weather now as well or better than they ever have.

Just wait for the next weather disaster to happen after 9pm or on a weekend. Good luck. Doesn't really matter to me anyway as I only listen to 970 from noon to 3pm now as I enjoy Joe Elliott. As far as I'm concerned the rest of the stations can all go dark. They did for me years ago anyway. With all the technology we have I think internet radio will soon take over anyway, especially once we have coast to coast wifi. You already can have any station you want by plugging your i-phone or blackberry into the jack on your car's audio system. That's what I do now. It's nice to listen to any station on a 300 mile+ drive.

I thought you were griping about local weather, and now your big thing is listening to all the great stations from everyplace except Louisville?

Which is it?
