Why WINS and not WCBS?

I'm curious why they decided to simulcast 1010 WINS on an FM station and not WCBS-AM during the hurricane. Any ideas?

The possibility of folks that wouldn't otherwise turn to the AM band during the storm?

Also, CBS-2's audio was being simulcast on WCBS-AM for awhile, though WCBS-AM did their own coverage, as well.

WINS is directional, aimed at NYC proper. WCBS is non-directional and has significantly better coverage of NJ and the northern NY metro area (Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, & Orange Counties), especially at night when WINS gets hammered by the skywaves from WMVP, CFRB, and KDKA.

Not to mention (I'll say it before Nick does) those stations' "IBUZ".

Point taken, but even so, the Yankee games scheduled for Sunday were already moved to WFAN; Mets games that would normally have been played at CitiField on WFAN had been canceled.

Perhaps it was a test run? The way programming is headed on FM in major markets, WINS just might be headed to FM anyway.

CBS also owns both local adjacencies to the new 101.9. But putting WINS on their more female-targeted WWFS instead of on 101.1 would crash more FM hurricane parties, imho, considering their new neighbors.

I'll go out on a limb on this and say... cause when New Yorkers think Radio News, most still think WINS for all news... they may not listen often, but everyone knows WINS news slogans and the news ticker sounder - it's respected, so why not simulcast something trusted in an emergency.

So, the question comes in, Did Fresh simulcast WINS? Or did the WINS guys join Fresh?

Jeff in Sa-ra-so-ta!

WCBS swamps WINS in the Stamford-Norwalk book, the nearest one to NYC. In Bridgeport, New Haven, Hartford and Provdence, WCBS registers while WINS is a no-show. And WCBS always has done so, from before the Yankee broadcasts. WCBS has a better signal in Connecticut (at the very least in the parts that 'count' -- the ratings locations). The more suburban and commuter lean to WCBS may have something to do with the response, but I mean, c'mon -- Hartford, New Haven and Providence?

And using similar stats, co-tower WFAN does the same thing to rival WEPN in those markets, and always has.

Same transmitter locations VS similar directional problems.
