Okay, a much more vanilla post than my last one (and one that's somewhat more typical of yours truly -- phew!).

Why WLW?

Did I miss something?

I read something about a legal agreement between XM and Clear Channel -- what's up with that?

The addition is, I suppose, neat for people who used to hail from Cincinnati but now live elsewhere, and definitely nice for fans of the station ... But I'm figuratively scratching my head over this.

I agree! Why WLW? What do they air that's different from other N/T stations? Why not KNX or KFI from LA or maybe KBIG, I would love to hear The Great Charlie Tuna every morning. Or even KRTH???

A few reasons I think:

1: The line-up is 90% local. National Exposure for Gary Burbank and the rest of the WLW hosts now.

2: They have something new in mind for overnights on The Open Road channel (171)

3: Cinncinati Traffic and Weather is now covered.

4: Clear Channel's "The Weekend" show gets on XM

and here's the biggie:

Multiple Sports.....one channel! Having the Reds home and away games, Cincinnati Bearcats BBall and Football (what conference are these guys in?) all on 173 will free up a little bandwith on the other channels. And if they are cleaver enough they'll have one foot in the door carrying a few NFL games once the Bengals season begins in earnest.

Reds and Bengals will be blacked out as Reds games will be on XM, Bengals on Sirius. Bearcats are in the Big East and should be played as should a handful of Xavier games. The weekend show was already on XM 165(Ask channel).

For those that have never listened to WLW it is not your average talk channel. The issues talked about are probably 50/50 local/national and each host takes a different approach. Its News/Talk/Entertainment with some wrestling style storylines on Bill Cunningham's show for example. Also Gary Burbank is a comedy show more than a talk show. If you give WLW a chance you should like what you hear.

Also back in the days of WWII WLW was 500,000 Watts and was heard in all 50 states and parts of Europe so there is some history as a national station. Today night time coverage is 38 states so news has been national and regional as well as some local.

I hate to nitpick but WLW was not heard in all 50 states when it was a 500 kw blowtorch. The nation had onlhy 48 states at the time!

Back in the days of WWII, toilet paper had splinters in it. I don't really care what the station was back then. I don't think that it will hold my interest today.

You probably read some of this stuff on the XM fan boards as well, which is where I first found out. Basically, Clear Channel needs to provide programming so it can share advertising revenue as a result of the deal in question, and since it does not program the talk channels anymore (or any other ones), putting up 'LW was the easiest thing.

Why WLW vs. other Clear Channel stations?

It's all local. The station carries no major syndicated programming, and is "live and local" 24 hours a day. Well, there's that trucking show overnight, but it originates there (and is coming off "Open Road" later this month). That makes it easy to put on with no worry about clearing syndicated shows. Clear Channel is not going to put Rush on satellite radio, so that leaves out all of their Rush affiliates for the job.

Its personalities are fairly high profile for a local station in a low-top-30 market. Mike McConnell is already on XM's "Ask!" channel with his syndicated "Weekend". Billy Cunningham has filled in for Rush Limbaugh.

And WLW is kind of CC's "in-house" talk station, or at least it was back in the days when Randy Michaels was a CC bigwig. Randy's presence in Cincinnati was one major reason WLW kept going as a local 24 hour talk station. He's gone from CC now, of course, but WLW built up a lot of "in-house cred" while he was there.

When Jacor/Clear Channel invested in XM, Randy Michaels sat down with a bunch of people and came up with a list of stations within the company they would like to put up on XM. The first stations were KIIS-FM out of L.A. and the "Lite" station out of New York, and they wanted WLW on there too. Now we all know XM dropped Kiss and Lite several years back, and now adding WLW is a settlement over those drops. OA is right, Randy Michael's #1 station is WLW (he help rebuild the old 500kW transmitter!), and within Clear Channel, it still is one of the THE stations in the company.

I'm probably in the minority on this one, but I'd listen a LOT more if Z100 replaced Kiss-XM. 20 on 20 has grown on me, and I like that they play so much new music, but Kiss seems limited to the most overplayed hits of 6 months ago. I'd much rather have a personality-based CHR, even with commercials, than "recurrent radio".

It was early morning when I typed that LOL but it was heard in Europe at the time and FDR used the station to deliver codes to troops in theatre.
