Why won't Renda simulcast KOMA on 1520?

The saddest part is the owner is actually sort of proud of himself for owning such a lousy mess of programming. He can't see that putting the am back to 50-60s would not only improve his return on that stick but it would also give him sort of a way to advance the fm property past being just an "old people" station. Oh well. Maybe someday he will get tired of paying the light bill on the thing and sell it to someone that cares when things get tighter and he's looking at his hold card. That's the real problem with cluster radio. There's always at least one neglected kicking dog in a group. 1520 is Renda's.

I have to give credit to Renda (and also Diamond) for keeping oldies on 1520 for 14 years.. other companies would have flipped 1520 as soon as they moved the oldies to 92.5.

The time is coming when KOMA-FM will have to move their playlist further into the eighties like so many other Classic Hits stations have done if they going to survive. They cant be stuck in the late 60's and seventies for another 3-5 years.

Exactly. If they were bright they'd pull the AM back to simulcast for a bit, then more the format and the best of the talent over to that signal, making way for more newer music on 92.5. They shouldn't expect huge returns on 1520 (because they sure haven't got them in recent times), so to me it seems like a win-win.

I'm guessing someone doesn't like the riaa fee structure. Someone doesn't likely think they can make back what they have to spend for streaming rights and costs.

It's a horrible position that radio finds it in. We find ourselves needing to stream or be left out in the future (it seems) but we are being hijacked by the riaa for their B.S. royalty fees. I don't blame Renda telling them hell no on streaming fees, but it leaves them in a pretty peculiar place. It's a damned if you do and damned if you don't thing. I actually feel sorry for radio operators today. Expenses keep going up and ad rev goes down. Every time they fart the fed government including the FCC figures out how to run the cost of running radio up. New Eas equipment, regulatory fees, legal costs, more paperwork then ever, medical costs thanks to Obama, etc. It's a wonder anyone can stay afoat.

Back on subject again: I'm just sad they won't go back to what I feel WILL work with that AM. 1520 is a unique AM. The signal locally is so damn strong that it doesn't get much interference in most areas. That's the real thing that runs off people... the noise. It has the signal and the heritage. Wasting it on second-rate talk product (yes they do have a few good shows) simply proves they have given up it seems.

KOKC has some shows like Laura Ingram and Micheal Savage that do very well in other markets. Still it's strange that after 8 years of talk programming KOKC never has grown an consistent audience like KFAQ in Tulsa has done.

What is 1520 doing wrong compared to KFAQ? A bland morning show, too much of a hodgepodge of programs? Or is OKC just not a strong market for talk radio?

I think the difference is that KFAQ has basically said "We ARE a conservative talk radio station, and we're not ashamed of it". You know what side of the fence KFAQ lives on. KOKC hasn't defined itself. Plus, KFAQ has had some controversial local hosts that have helped keep the calls flying around.

OKC isn't a great talk market because we aren't in the car for great lengths at a time compared to other markets. Also, our AM band doesn't have many decent stations, or as many powerful ones even. That keeps people off that end of the dial.

Good point. Journal has sunk some cash into KFAQ and letting listeners know excactly what kind of station they are. While Renda has done little or nothing to promote KOKC (besides a few billboards when they flipped) or done anything to define 1520.
I guess they don't want to p--s off the democrats listening for OU sports, Nascar or the overnight trucking show. ;D

When I worked at WKY, Fred Hendrickson mentioned that a radio consultant said, "The only way KOMA will ever beat WKY is when WKY signs off the air."

And it was true.

We beat KOMA like a drum. :)

Tony
