why would k-rock flip

Everyone goes on a tangent and the dentist does not know everything. Why would K-Rock flip anyway, both stations can co-exist in this market, its about time NYC has a few rockers and a choice, instead of the urban wasteland on the dial for ages. If the market can support 6 or more urban outlets than it sure can support two rock formats. K-rock is going nowhere there will just be a rock war in which the listener will benefit.

Precisely. With the advent of PPM, CBS would be looking to shoot itself in the foot if they were to wipe rock off the board. Hell, I'd be willing to bet that was the reason WXRK retained its rock format in the first place! Look at Philadelphia, a PPM market with four rock stations; all four did lose some cume in the last sampling, but in all fairness, the Christmas music station had a monster book.

Two of the three rock stations will survive....but three is really pushing it. Why fight over those crumbs left from the same pie? Smooth Jazz will not move to 92.3. It would have potential to siphon listeners from Fresh. The odd man out that I see would be Q-104.3. Interesting move on Emmis part...it should entice others to make some moves

What are the 6 or more urban outlets in NYC?

Urban wasteland??? can you name all six urban stations??

100.3 is CHR and not even a CHR rhythmic. Secondly there is no urban station on a rim shot signal near New York.
There are only 4 urban formatted stations on the fm dial in New York.
Why don't you study the facts before stating that there are 6 or more urbans in this market?
Additionally if you feel New York has so many urban stations you should look at how many there are in other markets.

B 92.3 "New Yorks Hit Music Channel" (would CHR be a bad fit) doing it before that station the Pluse comes on wouldn't be bad.

or

92.3 Smooth-FM "Relax And Enjoy" (to take the place where 101.9 left off)

New York's Country 92.3
Continious Hit Country

PD:
MD:

Mornings: Ron White (comedian)
Midday: Niki Landry (from KWBF)
Afternoons: Pat Garrett (KUBL SLC)
Nights: Broadway from B-93 Grand Rapids

I also think K-Rock has invested too much in new jocks recently to make a move, and will probably stay the course to see if the numbers see a jump from the PPM. That's why I indicated in another post here that Q104.3 might have more to lose. It has an older audience and its music is more similar to what's on 101.9 than what's on 92.3.

And...in a way...deregulation is coming back full circle for CC. With four other stations in the market, they've kind of boxed themselves in, in terms of which formats they can put on the air. Another CHR, for instance, would be nice, but Z100 is owned by CC, so they won't compete against themselves (or, tangentially, KTU and Power). Going smooth jazz or "lighter" than lite is another possible market opening, but CC can't do that...it would eat away at Lite FM's numbers.

A station that I see ripe for a format change is PLJ. I don't know if Citadel is willing to pull the plug, but PLJ might be hurt by the new 101.9, and its numbers are pretty bad as it is. If they slip even more, billing might drop, in turn, and since billing is really the only thing that keeps that format afloat....it would be difficult for them to keep it up. I think 95.5 would be perfect to take on Z100 head to head, or to put on a smooth jazz or "lighter" than lite format. Citadel has no other stations in the market and might feel that it can do better than its current mediocre numbers with PLJ.

As for country....not to rehash that conversation again...but it's not happening.

92.3 or any other station in Ny will NEVER go country!
Like you ,I wouldnt mind a new spice ,but it just aint gonna happen in this market.
Maybe if the station goes quiet and somebody pirates country.=)

What about the new 103.9 move-in station that Cumulus is supposedly bringing to NYC? If and when they move, could smooth jazz be a possibility for them? Or heck, even the folks at the new "Pulse 87.7" (if they ever debut), might also think about smooth jazz as a possibility.

Yes, because everybody knows how well Star & Buc Wild meshes with smooth jazz.

"Yo, when we come back, I'm gonna lay the smack down on more phony DJ's, but right now, here's Kenny G."

Nah, country has a better chance of happening here.

See, now I myself would have opted to pipe in Cledus T. Judd had he still been with CBS' country station in Tampa...

If anyone does country in New York City it would either be Citadel or CBS. Clear Channel already has country in NYC on HD 103.5. Also Citadel does well with country as does CBS.

Hows 95.5 The Wolf sound and if country went on 92.3, US 92.3 just a thought.

But I think this market could fit another CHR to compete with Clear Channel.

i seriously doubt krock will flip to country. they've invested way too much money in promoting the station in billboard campaigns, tv, etc. etc. i think with cheapasono out they'll give it at least another year under new management and maybe a new PD.

I don't see anyone switching to country in NYC anytime soon. However, in the off chance that someone does make the jump, I think they would stand to benefit from avoiding some of the more hokier-sounding names such as "The Wolf." I'd try to stay away from that redneck, backwoods type stereotype as much as possible.

Seriously do you think New York would warm to a station called "The Wolf"? Country would already be a next to impossible sell in New York as is. This isn't Montana.
You'd absolutely NEVER get a moniker as hoaky as that in this market no matter what the format.

I just used The Wolf as Citadel uses that on Country Stations. I got a idea just call it Country 95.5 or Country 92.3 or everwhere it else it will go.

I wouldn't even call it "Country 95.5" or 92.3 or whatever. Just like the "new" CBS-FM has mostly stopped using the dreaded word, "oldies," for demographic reasons, it would be the same thing if a country station were to come to town. I'd avoid anything that can possibly be viewed as a negative for the station - keeping in mind what market we're in - as much as I possibly could.
