WHY WOULD PAT BOTHER?

So Pat Cashman is hosting a weekly two-hour show on Everett's KRKO-AM. With his resume, why do you think he would bother taking his time doing Wednesday aftenoons at a rinky-dink suburban AM?I have to believe Cashman is better than that. He could get on his CB radio and probably have more listeners.I can't get KRKO where I live ... perhaps someone can check it out and report back to the board?

I was actually curious about this myself. He's got voiceovers all over the place right now. I really can't imagine what's calling him back to radio in what sounds like a pretty crappy situation.

Andy Skotdal is poised to take that "rinky dink.." AM to a 50,000 watt blowtorch signal. Pat's wise to get in on the ground floor now that he's burned bridges at most of the major groups here in town.

I just heard from Pat himself, and here's what he says:"I'm doing it purely for fun, that's all. It's obviously not a full-time thing...I picked the day---Wednesday---because it keeps the show away from the weekends when I am doing speaking engagements, emceeing and auctioneering. It's in the afternoon...not the punishing hours of early morning. The show can be whatever I want...KRKO is owned by a single person...not a corporation.... ...It feels a lot more like the small town radio stations I started at. And if I only get a dozen listeners, that's about 11 more than I deserve..."==================================================================

On air there was always the impression that he left stations on good terms with the possible exception of KJR where I don't know what happened but am guessing he simply wasn't given enough creative license and couldn't take it any more. He was replaced on "The Buzz" when they were tidying up their format and he simply didn't fit. On KOMO it was a similar situation- they got the contract with the Mariners and were switching to a straight news format. In both cases they announced the end of Pat's show well in advance of his departure and allowed him to continue on air after the announcement to say "goodbye" and wrap up his show for several weeks- unheard of in radio as I understand it. So they must have trusted him and had some level of respect for him and for his professionalism. So whence the "burned bridges?" Just curious. I hope the station does get a power boost- I'd love to be able to pick up Pat even if only on Wednesday afternoons. I wonder if Pat could do something at KUOW? Since Bill Radke's departure to California to co-host "Weekend America" there has been kind of a vacuum of any decent, interesting, entertaining local show on that station. I miss "Rewind." Pat seems like a great fit for them to do a similar type weekend one- or two-hour show. Just a thought.

Good for him! Pat's always seemed like a good guy and it sounds like this is just going to be fun for him.

This makes total sense to me. For many of us "old tools" we entered the game under a completely different umbrella ... and one of the best possible scenarios was a small outfit where you could poke your head into the office of the person who ran and OWNED the station and really cared about what was going on. As markets get bigger and with the changes in environment of the owner being several states and 18 organization layers away ... it isn't hard to see why when you enter under one set of expectations and have to live under a newer set that isn't as much fun .... why it would be a KICK just to be able to experience that old "lemme just have fun for a couple hours" each week.Many many years ago I bailed on the full time radio thing and went to part-time here and there. Loved the weekend thing because (a) still gave a window to 'get it out of your system' on a weekly basis; (b) still gave an opportunity to stay with the promotions, the people, the station functions; (c) no sales people around on weekends!!; (d) usually no production chores to speak of; (e) you're usually under the radar for politics, back-stabbing, ratings worries and so forth. Also freed up the rest of the week to go find a career that would pay what radio never would...!! Way to go, Pat!!! Glad SOMEONE can still find a playground in these here hills....!!

Totally agree with Littleboyblue, weekend radio IS THE BEST! No freaks, no managers, no garbage or stress, just fun. If only radio could do that in office 7 days a week!
