Why would?................

A radio station STOP the music to tell me they are playing over 30 minutes of
"Continuous Music???"

They may have been in the process of playing 30 minutes before they stopped to tell me they were playing the continuous music...
You see... Webster defines "continuous" as 1: marked by uninterrupted extension in space, time, or sequence,
or 2, of a function : having the property that the absolute value of the numerical difference between the value at a given point and the value at any point in a neighborhood of the given point can be made as close to zero as desired by choosing the neighborhood small enough.

I'm pretty sure the radio station is not interested in the "math" kind of "continuous"...heck, they didn't even tell their listeners happy "Mole" day yesterday.

The only reason I knew was because I hung around with some chemistry geeks in my past.
They always had some mighty fine wine (well, other stuff, really) ;D

No...not just now noticing...just now posting it.
You're right.
I've been listening for a long time.
Although you gave me a "smart" answer...you offered no ACTUAL answer.
You're so bright...exlain.

Because most PD's don't consider sweepers or promos as a stop.

And because

"We only stop the music twice an hour---OK... three times an hour, counting this."

would sound dumb.

Actually, that would be funny. It'd burn quickly, but at first, it'd be great.

What, you're the only one that can offer sarcasm and snark with the sweet, chewy center around here?

The problem is that it's been around for...what, 30ish years? And my initial response is not without merit....why would you expect a response or change when you complain only after you're fed up with it after 30 years?

Perhaps Meepster has been given the Chinese Water Torture all these 30 years and he finally broke under that drip-drip-drip. It got to me after all this time and now I seldom ever turn on a radio.

It's the reason I only listen to Sports talk. By definition, the content changes daily. Even News talk doesn't have that kind of turnaround...if I miss Rush for about three years, I can catch up to him in a 15-minute segment.

No,no,no,no...I claim no right to all the sarcasm.
I believe we all know that I encourage sarcasm on a fairly regular basis from any and all.
I was just doing it back.
Besides..I simply wanted to point out that just because a station SAYS continuous music, they rarely DO it.
Been going on for years, yet you rarely hear anyone bring it up.
I was just pointing it out.
;D

Snuggles?

Yeah, I get that. It's like a certain station that will GO UNNAMED (mostly because I don't want to get beaten) that would mention something like a 40-minute song block. Nothing changed, jocks still broke in, commercials still ran. I never got it.

I still like the idea, "Only two breaks an hour. Unless you count this one. But don't count this one because we're trying to brand our station here!!"

Shortly after I started at Froggy in 97, Kix decided it would do a 106 (I think)minute not talk marathon every weekday morning. It was strange. They did not talk at all for the entire time. no sweepers, no jingles, nothing. No ID whatsoever. It was horrible. Over an hour and a half not identifying your station is not good business.

Maybe the "Continuous music" is not the right words to use. Especially if someone decides to take it literally. What is inferred by the statement, obviously, is commercial free. Probably 99.9 percent of the listeners understand "continuous music" as "commercial free". Or they don't care. or they are too dumb to know otherwise.

just a thought at least.

OK, what are the odds my version, your version, or some hybrid of it will show up on a station somewhere?

Heck, I thought about trying to get it used. :)

KWK in St Louis, back in the 80's, had a positioning slogan which went...''106 point 5, the new KWK, playing continuous hits in a row.'' .......huh?

To be honest as a listener I've never counted to see if a station does the actual time or number of songs they claim, and I've always assumed that meant commercial free, not necessarily that they wouldn't have IDs or talk between songs. I really don't like the idea of no talk or IDs at all for long times because I hate it when I can't tell what station I'm getting if I don't already know, or when I hear a song I haven't heard before or for a long time, and don't hear anything said about what it was.

If you're hearing that type of programming on a really small station, you are probably listening to a really shy (or new) DJ, or someone is letting an album side track through because management requires them to do production during their board shift, because they are too cheap to pay anyone to stay over for a few precious minutes to cut a few spots! Either that, or they are forcing their jocks to double as janitors, and empty trash (or vacuum offices) during a shift.

If you're hearing that type of programming on larger stations (particularly if you are hearing this type of programming for days on end), the station is probably for sale, in which case a format flip is imminent.

There used to be a station here in Nashville that advertised that they only interrupted the music twice an hour. However, it sometimes took them as long as 30 seconds to tell us that, so they might as well have gone ahead and played a spot! ::)

And 97.1 the tower (www.971thetower.com is their website, I believe) NEVER plays two songs in a row without dropping a liner, or an ID, or at least a live announcer talking, between them. They must think we have amnesia or something! ::) So their claim of 97 minutes of "continuous music" during their "Bob and Tom afterparty" is bogus! And I don't want to hear about "Bob and Tom" unless it's Bob Seger and Tom Petty! :p

Correction on that website, it's http://www.classichits971.com/

It used to be against format to go two or more songs without talking or playing a jingle!

And I've heard 97 in Nashville. It sounds old school Top 40 (or did earlier in the summer).
