why wrff is the fasting growing station in america

I've said this before and I'll say it again - the Rock audience is CBS's for the taking should they make their move promptly. They can continue to tread water with this talk format they have now (it's fine for what it is, but they can't honestly expect more than a low 2 share, tops) or take WYSP in an Active or Alternative direction. I would love to see them diversify their approach and go for a broad playlist, but even the approach they had before the whole Free-FM thing started should help them top the competition easily if they were to give it another whirl.

WMMR has a very tired sound that leans far too much on played out oldies (and yes, that goes for all Greater Media operated Rock stations in surrounding areas too - why not save money and do a large simulcast if you insist on doing the same exact thing on every damn station? And Radio 104.5? I can't even begin to explain the problems with this station. They remind me of what G Rock in NJ sounded like when they first began their two station simulcast about 2 1/2 years ago (they have improved dramatically since) - a very predictable, timid, ballad heavy Modern AC / Adult Alternative format. They're like the second coming of Max as opposed to a real Alternative for Philly, like DRE or even Y-100. I can't even tell you how many times I've turned on the station only to hear them playing some crap soft song from the likes of Coldplay, 3 Doors Down or Goo Goo Dolls. Their "Currents" pretty much all hew to the Adult Alternative formula with maybe one exception (Smashing Pumpkins), and many of them are way too old to fall in this category (Muse, Killers, 30 Seconds To Mars, etc.). Finally, they're playing a lot of stuff that really doesn't belong on any station that calls themselves Alternative. Lifehouse, All American Rejects, The Fray, Mat Kearney and others are acts that can be heard on any Hot AC station out there. Also, some jocks would be nice also - they don't have to chat endlessly but it would be nice to hear some signs of life, especially amidst all of this lite rock fluff. Radio 104.5 needs to modify their if they're going to last. More focus on the male part of the audience is highly recommended.

Radio 104.5 was #1 with persons 18-34 and #1 with MEN 18-34.

Focus on the male part of the audience? They already have them. If it ain't broke... don't fix it. I'll admit... DJs would be nice...personalities helped make Y100 the great station it was... but right now... Radio 104.5 is running smoothly.

I don't know why I'm typing this though... you'll never read it. Or if you read it... you'll still complain.

i'm not complaining, i actually agree with you. WRFF is great the way it is, and so is WMMR, and hell i'll even admit that WMGK is fine the way it is.

Don't fix what isn't broken!

MMR vs RFF

MMR no focus, no direction from MCR to 65 Stones give me a break P&S and the relic have their following which keeps MMR afloat but the music, commercial load and just plain chatter is unlistenable.

RFF good focus, great music just enough commercials and no annoying jocks.

Check out the heavy influx of WMMR billboards all over the place, new logo, new liners, they know RFF is taking them down.

I don't get to listen as often as I would like, but I've yet to hear Radio 1045 call themselves "Alternative". For that fact, I haven't heard them identify themselves as Hot AC either.

On there job postings, they call themselves "Alternative flavored" http://radio1045.com/pages/jobs.html

They, "YSP" always played a wide variety of Active from good Alternative to great Metal, their music was their strongpoint, I am talking from 1996 until they went with the talk thing a few years back. I have not listened to them in a few years, I had to suffer with MMR when I was not near my satellite systems but now WRFF has filled the void very nice, in fact I find I have them on in my car instead of Lucy, Ethel or the Boneyard. In malls, its WRFF on my Grundig, its a great change of pace. I have heard YSP plays music on the weekends, I would think its the Active they were famous for, but why on the weekends only, either go full blast or put it to rest for good, they should stop this useless fill.

I agree with you 100%. On my trips down to the Eastern Shore of MD, i used to love hearing YSP. I would turn them on @ exit 10 on the NJT and keep them on all the way to Kent CO. MD. They always kept me listening with their new rock and metal. They always seemed to be on top of the new hard edgier rock. Why is it so hard for them to come back as active rock? The ratings show that they were Philly's #1 Rock station. To me it seems so easy what CBS should do.

Remember... most of those ratings were from Howard Stern. They probably did pretty good with the music... but a big chunk of those numbers were from Stern.
