WHY WYSP IS BETTER NOW!

Playing the older stuff is just plain better then the new rock. I love bands like the stones, the who, alman brothers, steve miller. I cant get enough of the new YSP GO BIRDS, AND PHILS!!!

WYSP is hanging on as Philly's #4 rock station. But in many markets, CBS, WYSP's owner, is converting underperforming FM music or Hot Talk stations to Sports stations.

It happened to WJFK Washington, WJZ-FM (formerly WHFS) Baltimore, WBZ-FM (formerly WBCN) Boston and in mid-February to KDKA-FM (formerly WBZZ) Pittsburgh.

Greater Media got the jump on CBS by flipping 97.5 to all-sports first. And since CBS's sports AM station, 610 WIP, still has more than double the ratings of WPEN-FM, I guess there's no rush to flip 94.1. I suppose WIP and WYSP, doing what they currently do, make more income than if they started to simulcast. Why should CBS put a format that still works well on AM over on an FM station if they can avoid it? But if WYSP should fall even further in the ratings or WIP appears hurt by WPEN-FM, that might trigger a change.

The same argument can be made as to why WFAN in New York hasn't taken over 92.3 or 102.7 FM.

I said this before, I more likely think CHR would take over YSP - 94.1 AMP Radio or 94.1 Now FM anyone?

It's really sad to see WYSP doing so poorly. Seems like only yesterday, I was locked into them all day!
Howard all the way until O&A went off the air at 7pm.

With that heyday long gone, I don't see them pulling out of the muck anytime soon. But I feel like
CBS is going to let this incarnation of the station breathe a little bit and try to find it's way as is. At
least for the rest of 2010.

WYSP sounds like a lot of the 'newer' generation of classic rock radio stations in the country. I don't think WYSP's problem is with their music. Any other market and WYSP would have decent numbers. The problem is that listeners don't trust the WYSP brand and frequency anymore. I think they're afraid to get attached to a station that seems to be in a constant state of change and turmoil. Not to mention, I think people were burned out on Bonaduce before he really even got here, having to see his face on every reality show, dumb criminal show and 'Where Are They Now?' and the act hasn't changed. But hey - it's CBS' money...

I totally agree. No one trusts the station anymore. Bonaduce isn't getting it done. They screwed the pooch when they let Couzin Ed, Matt and Huggy go. Not to mention getting bullied into dropping Kidd Chris.

I used to like 94YSP equally as much as I liked 933MMR,both were great stations and had thier own style but the first morning I heard old Howie's nasal bitter ranting YSP began to fade in my preferences. Rock stations need to Rock, followed by Rock which was preceded by Rock. Oh OK throw in some news blips and weather but let that DJ keep spinning...errr....clicking on those songs. Of course this opinion of mine was formed just after dirt was invented and radio was a totally different animal then.

Wow, the original Howard Hater!

I think a rock station that plays "new blips" and weather, would clean up in Philly!!!

People LOVE "news blips" and weather!!!

"WYSP, The Rock You Grew Up With. Police are still investigating an armed robbery that took place on Broad Street yesterday leaving four people dead. Looking at the Accuweather forecast, tonight should be cloudy and cool with a chance of some snow, lows in the 20's. And now "The Stroke" by Billy Squire! On wYsp."

You and the person that doesn't like Pierre could be their P1s!!!

You got it...chatterbox's like Robert, Howard and the rest should move to talk, talk/sports or some comedy format, like Howeird did. Rock radio is just that, Rock radio, little talk, news, weather, sports and music, music is the key and variety...oh yes my friend, their was a time when radio had news, traffic, weather, time, temp and sports in a one minute segment and got right back into the music...YSP circa 1995-96 was their best time, when Ferrell and Grease left and after Stern it was music intense, John, Toxic plus great new and older grunge and hard rock/metal cuts...if they could only pull that trick again..

wow I'm sure I'm NOT the original Howard hater. I can't believe I'm not the only one who doesn't enjoy the radio equivalent of dragging my tongue across a used diaper...but then again maybe I am. As far as my comment about "news blips" and weather: I'm glad I could provide you with the chance to keep repeating yourself , the mentally challenged people I know seem to love it alot too so have yourself a ball. I simply meant a MUSIC ( thats that thing where there are noises arranged in patterns and words that sort of tell a story, maybe your nanny can explain it better) played on a station that also happens to serve a local area and that people with a brain may want to know something that affects that area. Weather reports are for people who live in a world where elements affect the temperature and amount of sun or clouds that the region will experience rather than a bubble which consists of what a small mind can provide for content. Once Upon A Time in a land where the idiots were easily identified there were radio stations that played some music, then told you the name and artist and maybe some info on them, then what it was doing outside( or maybe YOU would go around the corner to see if its raining there) then some more music, then a few sentences about something the grownups might find interesting, then some more music and so on. Of course there is the alternative: A station that broadcasts some people who love to hear themselves talk about what they like and why anyone who doesn't agree is stupid and take some calls from people who agree and hang up on anyone who doesn't and some commercials by them for them praising them and why they are in love with them. Then they can cut to a full color interview about what kind of silicone tassle racks the speaker is drooling over and we can all be treated to extraordinary events like which listener can't spell thier name but can drink 2 beers in one gulp and race another listener to fill up a cup with pee. Or something like that. I'm sorry I don't share your enthusiasm to join a world that is in a full out contest to sift sewer mud thru its teeth and call the chunks a winner.

Nothing brings a thread to a screeching halt like a poorly written angry diatribe.

I stopped trying to read that missive when Evolve started to describe how weather works.

Back to the WYSP discussion. Is it too late for yet another facelift on this rock station?
Get rid of the Rock You Grew Up With, and most of the Airstaff. Try it from a different angle?

I'd be all for bringing back some classic YSP jocks and finding a morning show that can get a
few laughs, play some rock music and create some good radio. And with all due respect
to the highly evolved radio listeners, I miss old school T&A on the radio. O&A used to
do it right!

Back before that Internet fad thing showed up.

when and if YSP flips i dont wanna hear things like

i loved wysp it was my favorite
or why did they take it away all it needed was another shot in the arm
or how come they did not try a different brand of rock

With CBS flipping FM stations to sports in major markets, I still expect WIP-FM to land here before it's all said & done.

And seeing how they have a fixation on bringing legendary AM call letters to the FM side (e.g. WBZ, KDKA) it might just be "KYW-FM, 94.1 The Fan."

They have a good thing going this weekend with the Power Balads...if they keep this up and add these cuts plus more hair metal to the everday boring lineup they might make it....But some of the jocks have to go, their chatter is overbearing and not sexy at all if you know who I mean....if YSP is trying this PB weekend I doubt they are going to flip to anything else, they are probably in the rock sound all the way....a flip....not gonna happen...
