Why is FOX and The WB Pre-empting regular progrmaming just because ABC is running The Oscars? FOX is showing Bad Boys 2. The WB is showing 8 Mile.

Because it is generally acknowledged that the Academy Awards broadcast will dominate the viewing in the demographics that those two networks' normal Sunday night schedule would attract. Better to concede defeat and run programming that appeals to other demos.
______________

I really don't think that the typical Simpsons-Family Guy-American Dad demo is watching the Oscars. I'm sure as hell not.

I'm not either (I LOVE "Family Guy"!). However, I checked it for about 30 seconds to see if the ABC logo bug would be off again in the corner (it was) and I caught Reese Witherspoon (yum!) presenting the award for Best Animated Feature (the Wallace and Grommit movie).

P.S. "Family Guy" is new on FOX for 3/12! :)

Yes they are, despite a lot of the demo would watch that would not watch the Oscars. Locally, WNET, WLIW, and NJN are held hostage by pledge drive crap, helping make tonight’s viewing options are limited. Thankfully there is a Law & Order: SVU marathon on USA so all is not lost and thankfully The West Wing returns next week!
______________

Although I agree that KM's answer is the correct one, I am not so sure anymore that it is indeed true, although the network execs might still think so.

As the recent Winter Olympics -vs- American Idol proved, award shows are becoming diluted, and though Oscars remain the king of the award shows they have less pull than they once did.
______________

You're missing the point. CBS also aired re-runs all night long. BUT, the movies that aired on FOX and the WB were network premieres.

For what that's worth.

Premiers of movies that are 2-3 years old that most people interested in them have already seen at the theater or on DVD. Showing them with commericals was a waste of an evening. With the Oscar ratings being off as much as they were, I look for first-run programming from the other big 4 next year.
