Why...

I figure I have more job security now, swimming naked in a pool full of hungry sharks with bloody hams strapped to my body.

Where can I get THAT job? Sounds cool.

Eben has it right. Those of us still in the trenches are still having fun at what we do. The most interesting thing I thought about the first post was that it was aimed mostly at Clear Channel. What? No problems to report at Cox? Most of CBS is okay with you?

The last time I checked, there is a knob/button on your radio that allows you to change stations. If your knob is broken and you're stuck on WFLA/WDAE/WHNZ/WMTX, consider getting a new radio.

Trust me, CBS and Cox definitely aren't without their problems, and most have them have been discussed in this forum in one way or another (such as Cox's penchant for having such a limited playlist, voice-tracking, etc.). Maybe there's a reason that I didn't include some of those stations in my opening post---I don't listen to those stations all that much!!! I only listen to the Beast for Bruno and Wright. I'll listen to 97X once in a while, but not that much.

Maybe I"ll use that rebate money from the Feds to get myself XM or Sirius...

Hey guys, remember it's not a perfect world. But we all have to keep reminding others that radio can be better, but it takes numbers to change things. How many of you that are posting have actually emailed or called a PD or GM about your quips? How many of you in radio have gone to people and complained?
Switching to XM or Sirius isn't the answer. You'll never know what's happening locally, or what the traffic is, or if your workplace is set ablaze. Local radio does this. It helps those (occasionally) with needs locally. I've worked here for years and have seen radio give people a new life. Gifts for the poor, bone marrow to save a life, rasing funds for a great cause, you don't hear that on XM or Sirius.
I say we pull together, put a post up on all sights to find out the consensus of problems and then do an online petition or have people write in to complain about the issue. It may make a difference, it may not but the one thing we all have to remember is it won't change unless we do something.
I know at my job people are talking because of a former employee's termination and it's questionable justification;

The PDs and GM have heard the buzz all over and are now aware there could be a problem.
We all love radio, and we all need to stick together, BUT we all need to do something about it.
I'm ready.

I hate to tell ya but I listen to XM or Sirius 95% of the time when I'm in my car and get by with "what's happening locally" just fine with other resources I have at home or work. With all the cutbacks, half the time the "locals" don't sound live "local" anyway. So go ahead and fire up the "what local radio can do for you" sales speech and I'll respond with voicetracking, Fox News, and traffic that's more accurate on a web site or a GPS system than the 12 or so seconds dedicated "on air" every 25 minutes. I know who the the company's contracts are with and the big ones are with new technology... not with local talent. You lost me with:

"You'll never know what's happening locally, or what the traffic is, or if your workplace is set ablaze. Local radio does this."
--- You can't be serious.... maybe in 1988 but not in 2008. I can think of a number of recent examples where AM/FM has missed opportunities to regain credibility.

"Gifts for the poor, bone marrow to save a life, rasing funds for a great cause, you don't hear that on XM or Sirius."
--- Incorrect. Both companies have been in involved in charitable causes.
