Why is KEYE and KABB still broadcasting how to install digital TV on their analog signal? I thought once they cut off they cut off?
 
It's part of the education campaign. Once the phone calls die down then the analog will be shut off. I expect the other stations will do the same except for those that wait until June 12 to switch. Any analog broadcasting will be illegal after that date.

In markets where all the major network affiliates planned to shut down on 2/17, the education campaign was mandated to extend for 60 days.

Austin and San Antonio don't fall into that category -- KEYE and KABB are the only major network affiliates in those markets that shut down on the 17th -- so I guess it's up to them to decide how long they want to leave it up.

The way the Analog Nightlight Act is worded, you could argue that 30 days of nightlight analog operation after June 12th is permitted.

Apparently NBC reads it that way as WNBC-4 NYC has filed notice of intent to engage in post-June 12th nightlight operation.
 
One might argue that the education campaign for all stations in a market begins when the first major station drops analog. By June 12th everyone will have gotten the word and any further education won't help.

I guess I'd suggest the education campaign has been going on quite a bit longer than that -- but once major stations start dropping analog it'll get going in earnest!

The FCC released another notice yesterday in which they confirm that analog nightlight operation will be permitted between June 13 and July 12. They're going to assemble a new list of presumed-eligible stations.
 
Are we sure now about July?
What about secondary education and post secondary education?
What if some viewers holloer that they're going fotr their PhD in digital conversion?
 
I'm with Fred.

You'll never reach some of these folks until you shut the analog off...and then they'll call the station bleating and complaining that no one ever told them.

Turn it off.

Turn it off NOW.

Turn it off and save the $20K a month it costs to run a UHF xmtr. That much $$$$ can save more than a few jobs in this economy.
