WHYL Nights vs. WHP

Yes, WHP does offer Hanity and Savage at night, and its great programming if you need to hear more of the talking points of the day. But with Tom Leykis hitting the air before dusk, I tend to hit the AM 960 dial for something a little wilder to end the day. Its all in the ear of the beholder. One things for sure, Harrisburg has a lot to offer listeners that bigger markets dont.

....except that 960's signal can barely cross the river after dark.
Why they don't webcast is beyond me.

We are working on it. Look for it to happen soon.

Overall, there is a lack of local programming after 9:00 a.m. - 580 has Durgin in the afternoon - 960 has no local presence. Something other than political would be nice. Why is that? Lack of $$ or lack of talent? Both?

I can't pick up 960 in Lancaster to save my life after dark. I would love to listen to Jim Bohannon when I'm out driving around. Tom Leykis is absolutely HORRIBLE. Why do stations insist on continually trying to make listeners in this area like him?

I wish I could still hear Bruce Williams. What a fantastic show. What a fantastic broadcaster.

Surprised Lloyd or one of his cronies hasn't come on here to pimp the product, yet.

Maybe they're actually spending the time trying to find "air talent." Boy, that would be impressive.

Just curious, but serious about my question. I've noticed some of you have a problem with Lloyd for some reason(s). He was my GM in the early/mid-80s. Can someone explain to me (without being silly or sarcastic) what makes Lloyd the object of your zingers so often? I haven't seen him since the time I worked for him, so I'm not here to defend him. I'm just wondering why some of you have such a h**d-on for the guy. Thanks.
______________

There's no hard-on. In fact, I've heard he can be a decent fellow. And here's the highly technical explanation.

Repeatedly there's been a poster using various names in here who will hit and run, I like to say, and post positive comments out of the blue about Route 81's properties ("my wife loves the station!" "my husband and I always listen to it in the car! what a great format!") -- not just on this board, but across the Radio-Info boards. The user continually changes names. Radio-Info's profiles tell you the date of registration for each poster, which stays constant despite the name change. Then when you search for all that user's posts it shows the user almost exclusively posts on Route 81 properties. It's clear it's either Lloyd or someone connected to him.

Hey, thanks for the explanation. I appreciate your professional response. Now I understand the sarcasm a bit better.
______________

I don't want to develop this particular code tree anymore (I wrote this in 2003), but I think a user name change prohibition will be going into effect soon for precisely that reason. The purpose was if you called yourself "Z107Rox" you can change it to "CoolPop4Life".

> Radio-Info's profiles tell you

So does the page. It used to link to a bunch of zeros and ones (the reverse binary representation of the user's ascii real username) but now it just links to their user id number which always remains the same.

no local presence???

A few posts back, a comment was made about WHYL not having a local presence. Well, what would you call Scott Donato's local morning show?

I like Scott, and Angie is an old friend, so take this as constructive criticism directed towards them (for what my opinion is worth).

Scott and Angie click. They seem to like each other. That makes a listener comfortable.

What they need to improve is in the area of learning who their listeners are. Afterwards, they will understand why the showbiz/celebrity gossip that dominates their show will have to be scaled back... way back. Entertainment talk is easy prep. It takes a lot more than that to leave listeners wanting for more.

I have other thoughts on their show, but I don't want to come off sounding like I'm picking on them. I think Scott and Angie have the basics that could lead to a successful morning show. To at least give the perception that it's focused on local topics, they need to drop the TV talk, pick up on more cooler talk, and at least mention some things we're talking about in South Central PA.

I'll keep listening, because I believe they have the stuff!
______________

Re: no local presence???

Re-read my post - neither 580 nor 960 have a local presence after 9:00 a.m. - expect for 580 which has Durgin.

Why is that? Lack of money, lack of talent or both?

Thanks.

You know, I don't think I deserved that. I think I was quite respectful to Scott and Angie. I earned my dues after three decades, and I'm still in the business. This is a board of mostly radio professionals. If you care to post a comment offering insight or constructive criticism, we're all listening. Otherwise, personally, I think I'll tune you out in the future.

Funny that this was RadioMan's first post and he just registered today.

Smells like another Lloyd sock puppet.

Interesting. That's no way to make friends, that's for sure. I suppose if I had said that the show sucks and it's the worst thing I've ever heard, he/she would send a hitman after me. LOL
______________

Granted, Bruce Williams has a great show. Then again, so does Phil Hendrie, but WHP blew him off after a short time also. Leykis is like Stern, love him or hate him. Theres no inbetween. But, its one of the shows late nighters on the west shore are offered, and it does the trick for entertaining radio. Just a personal choice i guess.

And 'HP doesn't even make it out past Grantville after 6.

15 miles from downtown and the signal is gone!

Some blowtorch!

No offense, but Phil Hendrie doesn't deserve to be mentioned in the same paragraph as Bruce Williams. Hendrie's show only works if you're in on the gag. I wasn't, so I had no idea what was going on. The problem is, once you're in on the gag, it's not funny. That's why WHP booted his show. Bruce was on WHP for a long time and had a very loyal audience.

Other stations in this area have tried Tom Leykis in the past and each time no one listened. But they keep trotting him out. Waste of airwaves, IMO.
