WHYT--HOT HITS 96

Well, they were both consulted by Mike Joseph in the beginning of their Top 40 days and both station used the same "96 Now" positioner and TM jingles (Fusion, later known as Hot Hits).

Then, they both went their seperate ways as WBBM-FM became B-96 and WHYT (briefly) became 96 Hit FM, then WHYT, then Power 96, then 96.3 FM......(you get the idea).

also i wonder will Detroit get another CHR..??? thoughts..??

I think Detroit can support another CHR station. The problem is a twofold one, though...one, there's not a lot of good music out there right now. Two, there are far more lucrative formats out there, thanks to fragmentation, that have left CHR in the dust. I still say CHR can survive, but those who own and control those licenses in Detroit aren't going to be satisfied with mere survival, but growth.

CHR is also a cost-intensive format. It requires a lot of road shows and marketing in order to stay fresh and effective. Someone just needs to be willing to take the risk.

Detroit is a lucrative market and there's a huge audience out there that still believes in radio. If Garnett Sparks could make money with his little Class IV AM station in Royal Oak (before it was sold), anyone with a realistic view of this business can do it.

Does anyone have original Air Checks of Hot hits, and also when it flipped to Power 96/96.3 Jamz?

DETROIT COULD USE ANOTHER CHR STATION, WITH A BETTER MIX ON THE WEEKENDS.

Johnnie...give me an idea of what you think would be a good weekend mix. As a programmer, I'd like to hear your input. :)

Ken........i would be glad to give you what i think a good programmed station would be.

I think the weekend simbolizes fun and excitment and people want to release after a hard working week,
i used to programm my own show when i worked at WIDR FM.

i remember listen to the old POWER 96 back in the day, and hey sounded very upbeat yet they had a good mix of House & DANCE & FUNK. I would definelty do a show from 6pm to 3 am.....maybe mix in sound OLD DANCE and OLD SCHOOL top 40...such as Lidell Townsell....some House of Pain...Jump around...maybe throw in party music, like Jagged egde or even some old GAP BAND....if you listen to KQI....they play too much TECHNO on saturday's......i think you need to mix in these type of hits....since most CHR stations are more RYTHMIC now days......i think allowing DJ.s more freedom would be a good thing, as well as requests.

I remember WBMX & WBBM in chicago years ago did stuff like this. Combined i think you'd have a good station. WKQI...does the same thing every week. It's to BAD ABC...couldn't have stuck with the ol HYT....i think the CORPORATIONS just don't get what Good Fun Radio used to be like. :-\

Johnnie, you make a good point about techno on KQI, but you've gotta remember that EDM originated in Detroit. Even if it's just a niche genre, there are a lot of dance fans in Detroit, and Detroit otherwise doesn't have it's own dance station (save for KQI-HD2, but how many Detroiters have HD radios?). While it may seem like overkill, those weekend mixes are serving a purpose.

Not a bad idea...kinda bring back the party atmosphere and the hipness to what the Detroit culture should be.

If you look at how tired Hip Hop has become and to violent and negative, bring back the old dance and "true TOP 40 -party stations, where kids can listen to music that is fun and enjoyable. WJLB has become way to "Hardcore" same as WUSL & WGCI in chicago.

Bring back the old WHYT (Power96) Detroit needs a new station, a more diverse station,

I think it was funny, back in the "96.3 Jams" days one minute you'd hear "Slam" by Onyx, next the station had the "Stop the Violence" campaign, or the Wayne County Gun Bounty where you could turn your gun in for cash! Back then I would've given anything for one of those "Jamz Jerseys" they gave away on the air. Ghetto Booty was perfect in the evenings(Lisa Lisa). They did a great job of dayparting music. Mariah Carey, Boyz 2 Men, lighter stuff during the workday & then cut loose with "Dre Day, Tap the Bottle, Born to Breed, etc after 5 with Fogel(his own favorite disc jockey) bantering with Robo Traffic Cop. I've got an old promo from their Power 96 days for "Four Play For Pay" & some Casey Kasem Legal I.D's "From high atop the Fisher Building in the heart of my hometown Power 96fm is WHYT, Detroit.

Do any Detroit stations even play Stevie Wonder's Detroit Hustle anymore like 'HYT would?

The problem is that Hip-Hop & R&B as it is referred to, still gets the ratings and keeps stations CHRs from having to compete against each other. So as much as some of us want the old days to come back, they just won't.

I think Adult Top 40 vs. Mainstream CHR is a better model/throwback to the old days, and many markets still have both.
