I've read elsewhere how Qualcomm is paying stations in and near major markets to vacate Channel 55 early, so they can start using that channel for their own use before the final DTV switchover in 2009.

WHYY-DT is currently on 55, putting out one lousy signal. What channel did they elect to switch to when the upper channels are deleted after the switchover? And is it likely that they might petition the FCC to let them move there early?

Qualcomm and 55 ANALOG

Qualcomm won an FCC-sanctioned auction of the NTSC Channel 55 spectrum nationwide, and they intend to use it for their MediaFLO service, which among other things allows video to be streamed via cellphones.

Three stations using analog 55 have already gone digital-only, after Qualcomm struck deals with their owners (read: PAID THEM OFF): in the Orlando market (WACX-TV), Seattle-Tacoma (KWDK-TV), and in Suffolk County NY, east of New York City (WLNY-TV).

According to the FCC's website, there are 11 full-power stations still using analog 55 in the United States, including the WB affliate WBNX-TV Akron (Cleveland), Ohio; Fox affils WFXS-TV Wausau, WI; WFFT-TV Fort Wayne, IN and WRSP-TV Springfield, IL; and marginal independents in Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston.<P ID="signature">______________

They've chosen to return to channel 12.

They will stay on 55 until after the shutoff, at which time they will return to channel 12 and Qualcomm will have its spectrum. No chance of moving as the FCC has frozen changes until after the channel elections are over. Not that there's anywhere for them to move to that would make their signal any better.
