WHYY PRESENTS SPECIAL ON PHILLY TV KID SHOW HOSTS 3/5 @ 8PM

Channel 12, probably as part of its pledge-a-thon will air a special featuring Philly TV kid show hosts. Among those scheduled to be included: Sally Starr, Wee Willie Webber, Pixanne, Zacherle. Also WHYY plans to reair Things That Aren't There Anymore.. A very nostalgic Monday ahead...with hopes of raising money.

well, I'm sure they will dust off "The geator" to beg for money and lets not forget good old "Edophonic Ed" begging for cash..

If you TiVo this, remember to pad both sides (I did it for 10 minutes before and 15 minutes after) because the beg-a-thon always fouls up start and end times for programs.

If you saw the show last night...thoughts?

I had forgotten about Dickory Doc. I did see one shot of a camera with the WPTZ calls on it. The shots of the western being taped on City Line Avenue at WCAU was a hoot! Overall, very good, just a little heavy handed with the noise reduction on Chief Halftown. Dick Sheeran was a great choice for VO.

I do wish they had spent two minutes to explain a bit of TV history in the Delaware Valley. Like Philco owning WPTZ Ch 3 as an experimental station for Color development, later as WRCV and KYW. And the WFIL TV-6 forced Annenburg sell-off. Nothing on WIBF or WKBS either.

WKBS didn't really have a kids' host, though, did they? I know that later in their run they had Dr. Don D. Rose do voiceovers between shows, but did they ever have a "kids' host" in the vein of Captain Noah or Sally Starr?

I find it interesting that Philadelphia is one of the markets where a Bozo franchise never took off.

GAWD, I HATE CHANNEL 12

You have to pad it more than that. I Tivo'd it (with padding) and I missed the first part of the show. I called channel 12 and they said they shorten or expand the pledge breaks as they feel like it - depending on how the phones are ringing. The schedules are therefore meaningless. You'd think their over-paid half-million-dollar manager would know better than to annoy people when you are trying to get them to send money.

Boycott 12. Watch the shows on channel 39 or NJN. If you are moved to send in money, send it to 39 or NJ Network.

But the half I saw was interesting. But given their huge staff, big building and fancy equipment, you'd think they could do a lot more local programming. Mostly, they use donor's money to build a facility they can make even more money renting out to others. Your tax dollars at work - not to mention money from "viewers like you."

WIBF had the Ron Polao Fun Club. He wore polka dot shirts and showed old Republic Serials.

WKBS had sportscaster Stu Nahan (ring announcer in some Rocky films) playing Captain Philadelphia. He wore an astronauts outfit and hosted cartoons. Even had a heavy camerperson play a Russian cosmonaut (the Cold War was raging).

Really? I padded it 10 before and 15 after, and got the full thing. I still have it on my TiVo if you need a copy. It was nice to see that they touched on Candy Apple News in the last part, and the Captain Noah segment was very touching.

Thanks, I caught it on one of the repeats. The schedule numbers during pledge drive are totally out of whack. This show came up with running times from 30 minutes to three hours. It was an OK show. It was sad to see Sally Starr these days. I think she single-handedly triggered puberty for me and every guy I knew in junior high. She and Dick Clark worked together (from opposite ends of the same studio, I understand). How come only one of them aged?

I never watched Pixanne much. She was cute and in that outfit she should have been sexy but somehow wasn't.

I always preferred the real Captain to Philly's local rip-off Captain. And his wife was the world's worst puppeteer; they always looked like they were having fits and seizures.

I wish they'd given Lorenzo more than a quick mention. That was a terrific show. Very creative, especially the way he put on the character on screen. It had to be one of the best kid's shows in any market. They also should have done something on Ernie Kovacs and his morning show on channel 3. I guess it wasn't exactly a kids show but it appealed to a lot of kids.

as for the uhf stations in philly, here are the kid show hosts i remember:

channel 17: wee willie, of course, and even cranky ken garland filled in one week...then there was dr. shock on the weekends

channel 29: remember adam android and his hamster races, even sally starr did a sting at ch. 29

channel 48: captain philadelphia and dickory doc

Oh that's too bad, I always liked the old Philly 57 WGBS...now as WPSG they're a very former shell of themselves.

Long live WFMZ 69!

Anyone know WHERE Ron Polao is?

Anyone know. I fould an old photo of him
