Outdoors: The Big Wild making radio waves

When The Big Wild hit Wisconsin's airwaves in 2002, Dan "Gundy" Gunderson wanted his outdoors show to be a little different.

"This show isn't about our skills," said Gunderson, who co-hosts the taped hourly show with Marty "Big Red" Kay. "We don't take ourselves seriously and we're doing this to entertain people who hunt and fish."

True to his word, the show that bills itself "America's Premier Outdoor Radio Show," is different.

In coming up with the show's name, Kay said he wanted something "big," he wanted something "wild," and that stuck with Gunderson, who said, "let's call it The Big Wild."

True to their word, the show is, well, is big and wild. And it has caught on in a big way.

Guests aren't the usual hunting and fishing "experts." Tune in and you could hear the hosts laugh it up with any number of sports or pop-culture icons - all of whom share a passion for the outdoors - including Larry the Cable Guy, Jeff Foxworthy, Ted Nugent, Matt Kenseth, Ned Yost, Larry Csonka, Chuck Yeager, Aaron Tippin, Tracy Byrd, Babe Winkelman or Bill Dance.

Listened to on 18 affiliates spanning Wisconsin, Minnesota, South Dakota and Illinois, the Middleton-based studio show can be heard - remember, it's taped, not aired live - on WTSO (ESPN's 1070 AM) in Madison from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Saturdays; on WPVL (1590 AM) in Platteville (3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays); and WGLR (1280 AM) in Lancaster (3 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Fridays). ...
