WIBG1020 is SO right. While they have some kinks to work out both musically and technically, etc...The BRAND NAME is a winner and is fondly remembered! That being said...For NEW and YOUNGER listeners, that BRAND may not resonate or be equated with the original incarnation in Philly...but this NEW WIBBAGE FM will stand on its OWN legs once they get their mojo workin' as a NEW BRAND!!!
I admire Rick and his family of broadcasters for putting this thing on (a tad early perhaps) when EVERYONE says radio is over. It ain't over until the fat lady sings. It ain't over because MOST people still LISTEN to the radio...and whatever platform radio morphs into, WIBBAGE FM and stations all over the country will have to decide whether to stay live and local (or at least local if conditions permit) or become a REPEATER station, broadcast from hundreds or thousands of miles away. That's a sin and should never be allowed as Clear Channel and some others are doing now with many of their stations. Shame on them.
WIBBAGE FM should also consider having at least two different streams of music (if they can afford that.) I don't want to give too many ideas away just yet.
This lame-brained idea that one company can own virtually all the signals in a market has NOW been proven to be UNDOABLE. May the FCC wise up and somehow make the telecommunications act of 'the 90's be lifted and allow mom & pops to once again OWN and PROGRAM to their NEIGHBORS in EVERY market. Mr. Bama, are ya listening? They'll tell them if it is right or wrong for the market. And in the end, that's ALL that matters. It IS a business...and every business has to give a product or service to their customers. Radio is NO different. It hasn't been doing the job it COULD recently in MANY cases...not all.
So hat's off to WIBBAGE FM. Once things settle down and they HAVE the station on their OWN to carry out the vision, it should succeed. I'd personally like to hear a little for Philly Soul, but that's me. I think that if this novel idea really clicks once they DO fully take it over; it will be a winner like local radio CAN BE!
Naysayers beware. Live and LOCAL should always win if there is commitment and if there is a certain level of professionalism. This could surprise a LOT of people in a very quick amount of time. And if it doesn't, then I'll eat my copy of the WIBBAGE double album from 1970 on Post Records with the Picture of Joey Reynolds as a PIG.
I was ridiculed by my peers in the biz back in early 1990 when New Jersey 101.5 got started. They virtually ALL said it would fail. They ain't laughing now. It was JUST what the marketplace needed. And the execution largely was flawless and relentless. The timing was PERFECT.
May WIBBAGE FM have the same kind of BRAND loyalty in extreme SOUTH Jersey for many years to come. I know Rick, and I think he'll eventually pull this off with the right moves. From what I saw on the post above, they seem to be getting lots of good tidings. And they've only just begun!
BE BIG!
Jay
