WIBC 93.1 HD Radio--It's Back

WIBC's HD suddenly reappeared yesterday after a long (and peaceful) absence. Adds HD2 carrying 1070 The Fan.

They've been scrolling ads on the RDS for some time. I noticed that the analog audio was distorted Friday at 5AM....was still that way at 8AM. That morning, I pulled up to a gas pump near the Edinburgh Outlet Mall and heard a lot of hiss in the analog signal. I had heard that they were going to operate with the new higher power HD signal, which has some potential to mess with the analog signal...listen closely for analog degradation...more proof that you can't put 5 pounds of sugar in a 3 pound bag--and that is the whole premise that HD radio is built on.

This HD "science fair project" is SAD. I own it's ONLY consumer component receiver-the Sony—discontinued after many accolades and a SIX MONTH tenure. Its most-ardent fans were ANTI-HD activists—who purchased it for its DX capability – what an oxymoron. 1070 as a sub on 93.1 – yet another oxymoron. Congrats, Emmis! What is your share price today? :D

93.1's signal is so puny to begin with, why would you make it worse by broadcasting HD...

I can't agree with that...WIBC has one of the better Indy FM signals, at least to the south. It starts getting chewed up by the 93.1 near Louisville once you get south of Seymour, but before they signed that on, 93.1 made it pretty close to Louisville. In my direction, it blows WZPL 99.5 away. Now there's a poor signal--at least to the southeast.

I used to 100kw at 1800 feet+...around here a 50kw signal is hardly worth the effort.

93.1's signal isn't quite that puny. They regularly blast into Southern Michigan even during non-DX conditions. I also copied them in Bowling Green, KY this fall. May be different now with HD Radio.
