WIBC afternoons

I've always liked Ed Wenck. I enjoyed him at his WRZX and "Real 97.1" stints, and probably would have listened to him on Radio Now and Hank if I could have stood the music. But I'm struggling to figure out what the point is of his WIBC afternoon show. It seems to have become merely a rehash of the news from the top/bottom of the hour, often with a few more actualities, with Ed introducing the stories like a laid-back anchor. This doesn't give Ed much of a chance to do his thing, which I happen to think is entertaining.

It seems like the news itself should be expanded to cover more -- I don't happen to feel "up to date" as they say with the very brief newscasts they do now -- and then turn the rest of the time over to Ed to do something different from the news.

I agree with you Jim. The whole show is a bit lackluster...which is no fault of Ed's. His talents are not being used to their best advantage IMHO.

Not that it's Wank's fault, but their afternoon format seemed to be more entertaining in the Steve Simpson days. Before that, Dave Wilson wasn't everybody's cup of tea, but he seemed to add a more local twist.

All-news stations are doing better in the PPM era than talk stations so far. Perhaps a newsmagazine type show is the way to go in afternoon drive.

I hope Emmis finds a place for Ed Wenck that better uses his talents. They could easily have news anchors do the entire WIBC afternoon show now.

Speaking of Emmis, there was a rumor that Emmis folks were no longer permitted to post on Radio-Info. Wonder if there are any Emmis folks that can refute that these days?

Thanks WIBC for giving me the time to venture out into new frequencies in the afternoon! I appreciate that you don't put anything interesting on to keep me glued to your station. Very sharing of you!

There are several interviews in Wank's show that are not even one-on-one. You can tell they are canned responses with pre-printed questions, and that he's never even talked to the person being interviewed. These same interview/answers can be heard on station in other cities. It's a shame WIBC has resorted to this sort of 'pre-processed' canned interviews. Notice there's NEVER any small talk when he has someone on from outside Indy?

Very dull.

On the other hand, it's given me plenty of time and reason to check out 1430, which I go to quite a bit now from 3-6pm.

I've also started listening to WNDE more in the afternoons.

Again, Thanks WIBC! You've helped broaden my radio listening experience!

Kessler just posted on another thread in the last couple of weeks that there hasn't been any edict about it.

That kind of crap should be against the law...there was recently a business station in Houston doing that...they're now in banruptcy and under SEC investigation (not related, but satisfying anyway). :)

I think what you're recalling had to do with an on air financial advisor who was using the radio station as a platform to involve listeners in his own investment Ponzi scheme.

He also bought several radio stations, including KTEK in Houston, KJSA in Fort Worth but appeared to be unconcerned whether they were profitable or not, I believe one in San Antonio and 2 in Colorado (some may have been leased, some were own for such a short period of time, its hard to track the whole story). He bounced around to about 6 different stations so frequently in Dallas, it would have been impossible to build a market. But then again after his initial stint on KMNY, the ones he chose were outliers with signals that could not adequately cover his target audience. He kept trying to get one large signal that could cover both Dallas and Fort Worth, on the cheap. He could have likely chosen one 1KW range signal that covered one for each downtown area and accomplished the need more efficiently. He started out on KMNY which changed the calls for the bizradio format, but he bugged out for an outlier that he "bought". In general, the product was decent except for 1) his own show (not really bad, but he didn't deal with callers well, and he always sounded like he was in over his head, 2) his wife's show (the worst radio I have ever heard, including WSLM and WJCD).

Ed Wenck does an admirable job, but I much more enjoyed Steve Simpson in the afternoons and evenings. Steve is really good at the breaking weather coverage stuff, too. He just does a fine job, and I miss his voice on the drive home.

Glad he's on in the mornings, still.

Yes, Ed does the best he can with the format, but constant weather, traffic & news updates on top of a heavy spot load prevent him from getting a lot of momentum. That's the nature of the format though.
