Hi all.
Just found radio-info.com and these message boards. What a great resource for local radio discussion! With all of the talk about WIBC's move to FM, I just thought I'd share a few random thoughts about the station (not necessarily related to the big switch) that, for whatever reason, have come to mind over the last year or so.
Paul Harvey
Maybe it's just me, but I really don't get this guy, nor do I understand how carrying his syndicated audio blurbs is of any real value to the station. Half the time, I don't even get or see the humor in the "zinger" he always has at the end of his "news & comment" segment which WIBC plays during the noon show. Perhaps my biggest gripe aren't the Paul Harvey clips themselves, but rather WIBC's positioning of the clips in the noon and afternoon shows. In a way, I think they've let the Paul Harvey segments "hijack" these two shows, as there have been times that I've tuned in around 12:30 PM or 5:30 PM wanting to catch the bottom of the hour news report, only to have to wait until the conclusion of the Paul Harvey segment in order to do so. At all other times during the afternoon drive show, news updates are given promptly at the top and bottom of every hour, so why let a Paul Harvey segment screw with this timing for one of the afternoon news reports? In a similar manner, it would make sense to have a news update promptly at the bottom of the hour on the noon show, yet almost every afternoon, Paul Harvey is still playing right around 12:30. If nothing else, I think re-positioning the Paul Harvey clips so as not to interfere with air time prime for news updates would be a great idea.
The "Voice" of WIBC
Nothing against Lonnie Perkins (the voice behind almost all of WIBC's daily and generic on-air promos), but I just think it's time for WIBC to get a fresh, new voice for their on-air promotional material. Perhaps this will be a consideration when WIBC makes the move to the FM dial.
By the way, I'm just a little curious...is there a reason why Indianapolis doesn't have its own forum under the "Other Local Markets" heading? It looks like Indiana is far and away the most active forum under the "Radio States" category, so I'm sure an Indy-specific forum would be very active.
